ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe is an image scanner and stitcher. It was designed to allow people to scan large documents or pictures in parts and then stitch them back together automatically. Let's use as an example a movie poster. You can't fit it entirely inside your scanner. What you can do is scan different parts of it one by one. You can start scanning from left to right and then go down. You will get several different images that are supposed to make up one larger image. This application can automatically detect the order of the images and "stitch" them back together.

ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe can either scan the images itself or it can use previously scanned images. Actually, any images will do as long as they are similar in terms of resolution and as long as they have common features that the application can detect. I used a couple of pictures that I took with my camera to create a panorama. The application successfully put my three pictures in the right order and it created a very good looking panorama. It works just as well with scanned images, since, generally, they have better resolution.

There is a variety of tools that you can use to edit the stitched image after it has been processed. You can crop the image or rotate it and after you are done with it you can save it. The trial version won't save your stitched image.

While going through some old papers in my parent's basement, I found my copy of this iconic ad for the then-new Electronic Arts game company. The concept of promoting the actual software designers was pretty unusual; no one really knew the names of the programmers (outside of a few odd ones like David Crane at Activision or Scott Adams and his Adventures series.) EA (or "EOA" as their logo called them) was trying something new in order to differentiate themselves.

It didn't hurt that their opening line-up was so incredibly strong! M.U.L.E. is one of the greatest multiplayer computer games ever and Archon was similarly strong. Also worth noting, decades before Little Big Planet or even Duke Nukem's Build editor, there was Pinball Construction Set, with which I whiled away many hours making my own pinball tables in my misspent youth. Ahhh, my beloved Atari 8-bits! They were such great computers.

There are a few shots of this on the internet but I didn't see anything in any kind of decent resolution, so I used ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch to stitch this together from four scans. I considered trying to clean up the fold lines in Photoshop but decided to just leave it as is rather than lose any detail. So, you'll see the fold lines, to say nothing of a complete tear on the left half of the horizontal fold. You'll also see some Scotch tape from back when it resided on my bedroom wall. View it in the original size, and you'll also see all the details missing from the lower-resolution versions, from the lettering on the actual game covers to the studs in Bill Budge's leather glove. Enjoy!

For reference - this was scanned at 300 dpi and has not been resized, so that's how you'd want to print it if you want to make your own. You'll probably want to crop the edges a little. The sharp edge at the upper left was put there by the Scan-n-Stitch software, which otherwise did a very nice job joining the four scans into one.

The Canon LiDE 400 is the new flatbed scanner that replaces the LiDE 220 that was released years ago. All the scanners I've used in the last few years were the LiDE scanners from Canon. They perform well and are affordable, which is why I use them.

In addition to the LiDE 400, there's also the LiDE 300. The LiDE 300 is cheaper and has fewer document scanning features. In terms of image quality, you can expect them to be similar so if you're on a budget, you can consider the LiDE 300 over the LiDE 400.

The LiDE 400 uses a USB Type C to Type A cable while the LiDE 300 uses the typical USB Type A to mini USB. Canon's documentation says that the LiDE 400 cable cannot be used for other purposes but you most certainly can. That cable can be used to charge phones and transfer files. And if the cable is damaged or lost, you can get a replacement easily.

My review will be from the artist perspective so I'm not going to talk much about the document scanning features. In the photo above, those shortcut buttons are for scanning documents. There's the ability to create PDFs automatically, scan and email, scan and save to cloud, auto scan with auto crop and rotate and more. These shortcut buttons have auto-correction applied to the scans so the scans will be alter to look "nicer".

A detachable stand is included so that the scanner can be propped up and use less space on the table. I prefer laying the scanner flat on the table because I want to press down on the paper or sketchbook to get a proper scan.

This scanner uses Contact Image Sensor (CIS) technology for scanner. This means whatever you are scanner should be in contact with the glass surface. If the paper is just 1mm off, the scan will be blur.

This scanner can only scan up to a maximum size of A4. If you need to scan larger, you will have to scan multiple times and do the stitching yourself. There's auto-stitching functionality in the driver, but there's some auto-correction applied too.

This was scanned using the scanner driver's ScanGear feature which allows you to scan without any auto-correction and edits. Note that the scanner was able to capture the texture of the watercolour paper.
