Salcedo, one of the country's best-known sculptors, is building a monument to mark the end of Colombia's half-century-old guerrilla war, using the scrap metal from leftover rebel machine guns, automatic rifles and pistols. These and other weapons were used to kill more than 220,000 people in a war that began in 1964 and ended through a peace treaty signed in 2016.

Under the peace accord, the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia agreed that rebel munitions would be turned over to United Nations inspectors, then melted down and used to create three monuments: one at U.N. headquarters in New York, one in Havana, Cuba, where the treaty was negotiated, and one in Bogotá, the Colombian capital.

Former FARC commanders, who had to sign off on the design, initially resisted. But Salcedo convinced them by pointing out that rebel fighters, many of whom joined the FARC as children, were also victims of the conflict.

One example is the performance and sculptural piece November 6 and 7, 2002. It was unveiled on the 17th anniversary of a deadly 1985 rebel siege of the Palace of Justice in Bogotá, with Salcedo lowering chairs, one-by-one, from the roof of the rebuilt palace at the approximate time of death of the victims.

Ben Tully: You know, people in this town don't need guns! Now I proved that to 'em... and now I sound like an old man trying to convince himself. You know, son, I'm a newspaper man. I've travelled all over this country and seen every kind of violence and I know that if you give a man a club, well, he'll swing it. Now you take that club away from him, he'll learn how to argue. He just doesn't need the club anymore.

so i purchased my rebel lisence and went to an outpost to buy some weaponry and all the guns are grayed out.. not able to select them and purchase them, there is also no perks in the menu to purchase, please help me figure this out, thanks

One of the challenges of play in my youth was the lack of rebel weapons sold as toys. When I was a kid there were two blasters available, the Stormtrooper blaster and Han Solo's blaster (both back then were fairly accurate to the screen too, overlooking the big "Star Wars" sticker, those days are over) But when it was time to recreate the Tantive IV battle, there were no rebel blasters (but plenty of white plastic bowls for our heads). If only we had thought to build one from LEGO like Nick Brick. Of course, I don't think they would have been even remotely as cool as this (and would have fallen apart the moment we got shot and fell down).

Former FARC rebels finished turning over their individual weapons in late June, and since then the guns have been locked up and guarded by U.N. observers. On Tuesday the last remaining container was taken from a transition zone in northern Colombia.

Over the next five decades, the conflict between the rebels, government forces and right-wing paramilitaries claimed at least 250,000 lives and left another 60,000 people missing. Millions more were displaced from their homes fleeing the bloodshed.

(CBS News) ANTAKYA, Turkey -- Just as President Obama is trying to win congressional support for a strike against the Syrian dictatorship, there is a new complication. A video obtained by The New York Times, who said these were Syrian rebels about to execute Syrian government soldiers. CBS News is not showing the actual shooting, but as the video goes to black, you will hear the sound of gunfire.

There are many rebel groups battling the Syrian dictatorship -- some the U.S. has called freedom fighters, others it labels terrorists. Secretary of State John Kerry said "the bad guys" -- as he calls them -- make up only 15 to 20 percent of rebel forces.

The Free Syrian Army is one rebel group the U.S. administration is betting on. These members -- whom the U.S. considers moderates -- are seen as a force that can counter the growing influence of radical Islamic groups that have also joined the fight.

So if Col. Khotoba represents the kind of rebels the U.S. agrees with, what about the radical Islamic rebels that the U.S. considers terrorists? It's not a new phenomenon -- CBS News had reported last year for "60 Minutes" on a Syrian jihadi rebel leader who was executing Syrian soldiers. We have seen numerous videos come out since then. Many Syrian people are of course horrified by what they've seen and their experiences with these types of extremist groups. But because they're such an intimidating force on the ground, few people are really willing to challenge them.

Editor's note: During the Sept. 5 broadcast, we showed a photo from The New York Times that the newspaper said showed Syrian rebels executing soldiers loyal to the Assad regime. The Times said Sept. 6 that it was from 2012.

The U.S. supplied a considerable amount of weapons and ammunition, of both American and Soviet-type from Eastern Europe, to Syrian rebel groups under operation Timber Sycamore. For example, Jane's Defence Weekly reported that in December 2015 the U.S. shipped 994 tonnes of weapons and ammunition (including packaging and container weight).[3][4]

When stormtroopers get into fire fights with the rebels, I noticed that a few are killed after a single shot to the chest. Is their armor not really armor or are the rebels guns just that powerful? In some of the books in Legends, it seems they can take more of a beating but in the original movies they can't seem to take as much. Do some stormtroopers have different grades of armor?

Lastly, regarding stormtrooper aim: Not sure if you've ever been in a firefight (if you haven't, thank your lucky stars and the next soldier you meet), but the hit percentage statistics among police officers in shootouts is really low, something like 15% of all shots fired hitting their intended target. There are some notable incidents where criminals AND officers empty their guns at point-blank range and don't hit each other. Soldiers in combat may fire hundreds of rounds at an enemy position just to make the other guys keep their heads down. While there are some necessary rules regarding the survival rate of your main characters in combat (they don't get to be heroes if they die in the initial skirmish 2 hours before the final climactic scene), various accounts of real shootings generally lend credence to the argument that when your adrenaline's going and you could die any second, your aim suffers.

Colombia's Marxist FARC rebel group on Tuesday all but concluded handing over another 30 percent of its weaponry to the United Nations, part of a peace deal signed with the government to end more than 52 years of war.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have given up nearly 60 percent of their arms, as agreed late last year with the government of President Juan Manuel Santos. The rebels are expected to complete the second tranche of the handover on Wednesday.

The Philippines has resumed the decommissioning of thousands of firearms turned in by ex-Muslim separatist rebels in the south as part of a peace deal with Manila, after the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the process, officials said Wednesday.

A second phase of the process took place in February 2020, but it was disrupted soon after by the onset of the vital outbreak in the Philippines, officials said. A fresh round that aims to gather and put out of military service 14,000 guns surrendered by former MILF fighters began last weekend, Von Al Haq, a spokesman for the group, told BenarNews.

For the past four months in Libya, rebel forces made up of civilians and army defectors have been waging battles against Muammar Qaddafi's armed forces, holding their own and sometimes advancing with the assistance of NATO air strikes. Scrambling to arm themselves against mercenaries and a professional army, rebels have been making use of everything they can -- from using captured weapons and munitions to rigging anti-aircraft guns and aircraft rocket launchers to the backs of civilian pickup trucks. Collected here are recent images of some of this weaponry used by the Libyan rebels.

Everything was going according to plans until Ellet decided to change them. Told
to attack while it was still dark, he dallied around with last- minute
preparations so that it was after sunrise before he got into position, and by
then the Vicksburg guns were on full alert. As in the ill- fated attempt to ram
the Arkansas, a big river eddy caught Queen of the West just as she was bearing
in and her blow glanced off. She fired her turpentine balls, setting Vicksburg
afire, but the Rebel guns began exacting a stern toll. The cotton bales Ellet
had layered around the superstructure caught fire and all hands were ordered out
into the hail of enemy fire to shove them overboard. By then it was apparent no
more could be done and, while hundreds of Vicksburgians ran onto the bluffs to
watch, the Queen, still ablaze and being shot at by every gun in the batteries,
bore off toward the western shore where Sherman had some batteries of his own.
