Those look heavily used according their (possibly loose) sockets, labels, glue...

I actually thought they look nearly brand new. There is almost no darkening on the glass. How come you think they are heavily used?

Why is there a slot down the base of them? It looks too rough to be original and shows some chipping on the Bakelite...

I guess it's to allow the base to expand to slip over the glass and fit more tightly via friction.  That is, you make the glass slightly bigger than the base so the bakelite flexes when put on the tube and holds things tight.  Would make it easer for the glue to set, etc.

About those CD47 tubes on eBay... To me, they look slightly used, or maybe abused during shipping or storage. You can see minor chipping all along the expansion slots of the base.

If you look carefully at the photo of all four tubes you can see that the one to the right has a different label than the other three, it also has a date code on that label which the other three are missing. My guess is that the three with the same label have another type of bakelite socket compared to the one on the right, maybe they changed the type of bakelite between these two different models.

The one on the right looks similar to the leapsecond photo as that one also has a date code.

In case any of you saw the movie that just came out, "Battle of the Sexes" , there is a hilarious scene where Steve Carell (who portrays Bobby Riggs) goes on a monologue at a gambler's anonymous meeting. The same can be said about buying nixie tubes on Ebay.

All the fun bidding starts in the last 30 seconds....stupid isn't it? I wish they'd institute a Dutch Auction style....any new bid adds 10 minutes to the auction end time...that way, the seller gets a better deal and less people get 'sniped'....but then the number of 'bargains' people get would be lower I suppose.....

Sold for 3200€ (3800$), so almost 1000$ per tube... madness... I mean paying 600 for one for collection is already crazy, but buy 4?...

Just to put that in relation: 26 Dalibor tubes would cost the same... 26!!!!

Well, whoever bought them knows that when they get tired of these tubes, they can resell them and probably break even, or better. I sometimes wonder if these are passed-around thru various auctions every few years, from one person to the next.

I see a lot of parallels to those who collect more conventional forms of art. And I've seen a lot of art that makes me wonder what people were thinking they paid millions for it. Only the buyer knows.

Does anyone know what kind of devices used CD47s ? Certainly not a calculator or any test equipment.

I heard a story that they were used in weight stations for trucks. There is symbol tube in the same size made by rodan that can display "kg" and "t" which would make the story plausible.

True - the systems are called "weighbridges" - the digits were big so that they could be read from the trucks.

I also heard that they were in East Germany,,,

Whatever anyone else thinks, I like them. Used to have quite a few, sold most, now just one set of 6 left (not in a clock at the moment)

Yes. The price is what it is. I'm a big fan of Rodan tubes in general. I think they stand alone as a work of art. The extra little touches such as chrome bases and chromed labels are what make them stand out for me. Plus they function well and were made in a huge range of sizes and styles. The CD47 is not just a unique member of their product set, there is simply nothing else like it in the world of Nixie tubes period.

Does anyone know if they're long life (mercury) type tubes?  I'd hate to spend that kind of $$$ on them and have them sputter out when being used.

Probably not.  I haven't seen anything saying that they're long life tubes, but have seen several pics of darkened smaller versions (70mm GR311's.)

Right. I have one of those tubes (but none of the digit ones). I got it cheap because it had an internal short, but it was just one of the big symbols caught on an interior part. Some careful tapping freed it.
