Anyone who has made a Nixie watch, what microcontroller and tube driver did you use?

I am planning on building a watch over the summer but I'm not sure where to start.

I started by doing an analysis of how much energy I needed to run the watch (which means you need to decide on which nixie tube to use, how many of them, and how much display-time between charges), then research the batteries available. Next, you have to decide how to control it, and the energy budget for that. Finally, which device will you use for timekeeping, eg DS3231.

I used a PIC 16F microcontroller, and two TD62083 octal Darlington arrays. Unfortunately, that part is no longer available, and its successor the TBD62083 is not currently available in the smallest TSSOP package.
