For many Electronic Engineers, myself included, AoE was the definitive text.... but that was 26 years ago.

Parts of it obviously became outdated as the industry progressed and the 3rd edition has been long discussed and anticipated.

Not cheap, but many regard it as essential if you're an EE...

When I studied Electronics at Manchester University back in 1985 that was one of the mandatory texts. I can't remember the price back then but it was pretty steep around £30 I think. My copy is looking a bit battered now so maybe a purchase is required

The author is active on Usenet's sci.electronics.design. He's already
published an eratta list and is soliciting errors and corrections. I
think he's offering some kind of bounty for this.

As others commented on the blog, the basic EE theory is largely unchanged. What *HAS* changed in the past 30 years is the amount of simulation work you can do on circuits, so I would hope that is covered in the new edition. When I choose components for my designs, the availability of SPICE models is a major factor.

I noticed that there is a new book out about LTSpice - I agree about simulation - all the valve amp design I now do is also modelled in LTSpice...

Tragically, that was on offer at an excellent price as pre-order when I first stumbled upon it on amazon (I think it was when Hack A Day mentioned it) and I forgot to order it for a couple of days, then the price shot up...

Thanks for the heads-up Nick - that's my Christmas present sorted out then!

The 'big silver book' (AoE 2nd ed) has acquired legendary status in my household for being the book I could be found reading in all sorts of slightly incongruous holiday places (trashy novel on the beach? Nope, it's the big silver book!). Can't wait to share the good news with Mrs Jon that there's a new one for her to buy me... :)

Cheers,

Jon.
