Tim,

Thanks for the heads up. I've heard of these, but never seen a photo of one.

Gad, I feel old. I've USED that model of survey meter. There is a
variant that was made by Nuclear Chicago that used dekatrons for the
last two digits and then vertical neon counter modules for the rest.
This is the type with 10 neon lamps behind numbered film.

We had one at the first nuclear plant I worked at that was an automatic
planhette (held paper smear sample discs). Using all transistor logic
(no ICs), it rotated a plachette under the detector, counted it and then
output the result to a printer. The printer consisted of a mechanical
adding machine with a solenoid over every key. A fascinating thing to
watch but a b*tch to repair.

This model was sold by several lab equipment suppliers, often badged up with their name - this is the third or fourth I've seen. I have one branded by Griffin and George Ltd, a major supplier to the education sector - believe they're still in business as Griffin Education, part of Thermo Fisher. The counter is a very late one as far as the dekatron era goes. It uses two Mullard Z504S selectors, with mine carrying date codes from the end of 1971. That date seems consistent with the design of the enclosure, so I suspect they're probably the original tubes.

In tribute to it, I cobbled a spinner to a mechanical counter. Enjoy:

I have a related piece of gear, a dekatron prescaler:

Nice. Have you looked at the model of dekatrons used and their date codes?
