It's really all just about the spiral though... I'm not even sure what the symbol is for to be honest but I've rarely seen it a few times and just happy to have a couple NOS finally.

I knew I had seen this somewhere, but it took me a while to find it:
ZM1263 In line, side-viewing indication Incorporates a red filter Characters —, +, ~, * 10-5 170 140 2-5 Flying Lead '* This is a symbol shaped like a Catherine-wheel on type ZM1263 that may be used for special indications, e.g. fault condition.

And now I have found that it was the ZM1263, I have found several other references:
The ZM1263 is a side - viewing tube that contains symbols for alternating (N), plus (+), mines (-) and a fourth symbol, consisting of a spiral of two and a quarter turns for `equipment failed' or anything else that has no con- ventional symbol.

A friend of mine told me that he'd seen the spiral symbol used on a gas chromatograph to indicate that the oven was warming up.

I have the manual for the 8300A and two units. Both of them have badly worn tubes. There's so much metal on the inside on the inside of the lesser significant digits that you can't even read them. I could slap together a single working unit but none of the tubes would be the same brightness. Somebody must have left them turned on for ages.
