These were being used for B7971 tubes anyone know what they were originally for

It could be it was intended in first instance for some photomultipliers.

I have here some Philips experimental tubes (with field effect cathode) with a look alike base, but as long as I don’t know the exact dimensions it is hard to give reliable information.
May be you can place the sockets on a scanner en sent the scan to the group and me as CC

They are 50mm in diameter, 5mm thick, centre hole 15mm in diameter

Burroughs had them listed as SK-137 in their catalogues.
