What makes you happy then :-)

Its not ideal, I know - the lack of a files section for a start, but
at least its here! We'd really appreciate ideas for improvement...

Start a yahoogroup called simply 'Neonixie' ?

I'm just having a bad morning, I really dislike this google format,
but maybe I need to change instead.

Hi Nick,

gmail sucks...

Problem is though I have a forwarding set on my gmail account to forward all mail to my "real" email address where everything comes together google does NOT forward the list messages there nor does it allow in it´s group settings any alternative email to CC the group messages like yahoo did...

I use gmail only as a backup and not regulary so following the list is, well, going down the hill a bit with google...

Hmmm. As it happens, we now have complete control over the old Yahoo
group - I'm not the owner of that one - another mod is who is
sympathetic to the group - the three owner/mods of this group between
them own & are mods of the Yahoo group too. Ray is no longer involved
in any way - he's handed over complete control.

In theory, we could move back there, but its a big ask now that
several 100 members have moved here. You can view the forum in a
variety of ways - look at the "options" settings in the top right.

My BIGGEST gripe is the lack of a "files" section for photos etc.
Still awaiting ideas on that one...

Lost me I think, but this group just sends to my normal email address as did the previous. [I didn't use gmail for this and I didn't use yahoo mail for the other].

463 members and counting...

I started archiving to this group back in Jan 2010 and set up an extra
copy of all messages to mail-archive (
http://www.mail-archive.com/neoni...@googlegroups.com/info.html ) as
of September 2010. I have the archive of all previous messages in a
broken mbox format that mail-archive would be happy to import of
someone has the time to deal with it - that would make a fast version
available. Volunteers? Anyone?

I'm not sure that Google Groups would be happy to help us with an mbox
import...

I'd be happier if Google could manage to keep it working reliably. I
use the web interface, and something like 20% of the time, I get
either a "We're sorry - discussions for this group aren't available
now - please try later" or the page just hangs during load.

Regardless of what free service we use, we're the "product" being sold
(to advertisers), not the customer, so we're at the whim of whatever
provider we're on. As I recall, one trigger for the Yahoo Groups
exodus was their fiddling with the user interface - it wasn't just the
absent group owner. Of course, right after we moved in here at Google,
Google pulled the "You can't edit your group intro and downloadable
archives will no longer be available" stunts.

However, running on a paid platform means either relying on the
kindness of whoever runs the site, or actually paying money for it,
both of which have their own sets of issues. A couple of the other
forums I'm a member of have settled on Amazon Web Services w/
vBulletin, where a couple of the founders chip in the small amount of
money needed to keep the thing going. I don't know if that model (or
anything remotely like that) would work here.

Can you get the members list from gogle? if so you should be able to
"invite" everyone on Yahoo.

The other possibility would be to set up a list/website on someone's
server. But unless you have someone with a server who is willing to
share, the monthly cost to have one just for the Nixie group would not
be cheap.

I would be willing to go back. I have all this forwarded to my Yahoo mail but I miss the file sections we had. I would be glad to help but I know nothing of importing to mbox. Just my 2 cents in here.

IMHO, I do not recommend any re-hosting of neonixie-l; That would be
destabilizing.

Members should make good use of the many free storage services
available individuals and just post links to their content.

You can select from more of the google kool-aid, likely to to see
continued integration with groups.google.com and not likely to go
away
(might change, but won't go away)

That's about 20 times as much vintage test equipment as a guy could reasonably
use in a lifetime. That fellow had the collecting bug, but bad.

Sacrilege! One can never have enough equipment to use :)

I wonder how much of it works?

I think that he should rename the auction:

"Need a new hobby? Try this one! LEARN TO REPAIR TUBE OSCILLOSCOPES AND MISCELLANEOUS TEST EQUIPMENT in your spare time! (Caution: This auction requires but does not include a large self-storage unit. Divorce attorney optional but recommended)"
