Hello guys!

I would like to share my excitement of todays experiments! I was spending a lot of time on making tooling recently, so another glowing something after long time:

thanks!

Now thats more like it! Really nice progress if you compare that to the earlier glow tube you made before. Love it.

Amazing! Nice glow! I like the last picture where you show everything is still hooked up to all the equipment, very cool if you can do this just at home!

Hi Dalibor,

looks good! What is the leakage rate of the glass valve, I am curious?

Hello Jens!

It is rated as a high vacuum glass valve, so I guess there should no measurable leak.. I greased it with high vacuum grease, rated for 10e-6 torr. I bought it on ebay for 11 pounds from UK..

Nice!

I am currently figuring out how to connect the Neon bottle to my system, I will try one configuration tomorrow I guess.

Hi,

Is it a kf-16 to threaded hole connection? Send me photos and description, I am making some parts for my system currently, so I could make that for You.

Hi Dalibor,

I will take more detailed pictures today. My problem is that the needle valve I use is pure crap... It is not even bellow-sealed. I was sure it was, but it's not. See an image here:

http://www.jb-electronics.de/tmp/needle_valve.jpg

So I will get rid of it and maybe just use it for the air-inlet... Man, I had really no idea about vacuum when I bought this. Stupid me.

I already have a pressure reducer matching my gas bottle with a 1/8" NPT thread. Ron helped me a great deal: I already purchased a matching compression fitting that will be vacuum tight (I hope) with enough teflon tape. In the compression fitting I will mount a 6mm copper tube on which I will solder 1mm capillary tubing, so quite similar to your setup.

I still need a connector to the KF16-system. I will go for a similar needle valve that you use and hook it up to the 1mm capillary. But what I really need is a connection to my KF-16 system in which I can screw one of the 1/8 NPT threads from the compression fittings.

I have seen that you already have such a flange. Where did you get it?

As always, amazing work. I still prefer the "retro" shape of the
original, but I guess a regular cylinder is far more reproducable if
hand-blowing.

Please keep us informed about how long your nixies are powered-on. It will be very interesting to see
pictures as you run the tube for several weeks (hopefully years....).

Very nice work! Your tubes look like they came from a production-line rather than a garage experiment.

Beautiful work - just goes to show what somebody smart and determined can achieve.

Now, any chance we can see one of these tubes with an argon fill? Just love the idea of a genuine purple nixie...

Hello guys,

thanks for support, it is very good motivation! I am actually working
all the day on that stuff!

Nicholas Stock: Once I manage those small 5cm digit tubes (and get
some cash), I am going to improve my glassblowing stuff so that I am
able to work with bigger diameter glass. I am going to make even
bigger tubes! ;-)

Jon: It is no problem to make an argon filled tube, however its glow
is very dim and not much visible in daylight. Once I finish that clock
project I am working on, I will make it! Just remind it.

Bye!

Hello!

I shot a short video of my tubes in action here:
http://dalibor.farny.cz/nixie-clocks-for-a-contest/

Tubes are now after aging process (around one day on 4 times higher
current, each digit) - that made much more uniform glow on all digits.
They are running around one week (24/7) now.

Thanks for watching!

Respect!

One question:
What is the function of the glass pipes running from the top tip to inside?
Is that only ornamental or is there a 'secret' function?

Hello all!

The pipes on the back are there just for design purposes - this is a
glass art contest, so I decided to add some extra glass stuff here ;-)
I planned to make a anode wire going through the pipe, but it turned
out to be pretty complicated and didnt look much well.
