Jon Ellis' wonderful clock kit showed up here in neonixie a while ago. I love my dekatrons and my spinners and such, but they don't get out much into the visible homestead due to some rule about feng shui, or dangling HV, wires or some other so called "rules".

I loved this idea and planned to use the case that Jon designed. Unfortunately, his supply of the cases ran out. I can totally relate to this in trying to keep a good supplier for acrylic laser cut services is hard, too.

I had this simple vision for a mid-century design using a recycled box that I had. I've saved lots of cool boxes over the years for these sorts of things. It took a bit of alignment/centering cheating in order to get the cap on the end of it, but I do like how it came out.

Jon suggested that I share it here, so....

I took a different path because I am a broken record and like to see my gubbins inside.....

It's a great clock, if you haven't made one, then talk to Jon!

Are there kits available? If so where can you purchase one?

Thanks!

Hi Peter - if you're interested in a Dekachron kit, just PM me to talk about the options.

Keith and Nick have done amazing jobs with those enclosures! Both are definitely slicker than the design I had, and give totally different takes on the clock. Keith's design looks really 50s to me, which is of course totally on point for the heyday of the tubes...

I bought one of Jon's Dekachron kits shortly after my last post to this thread. I assembled it a few days after it arrived and began designing a case for it in Fusion360. I am still making some tweaks to the design. When complete it will be held together with M3 square nuts and hex screws. The current case as pictured is currently held together with superglue, zip-ties, and hot glue! I'll also be adding LED back lighting. The light will be diffused through a light guide that surrounds all 3 tubes and seals the grill on the front of the clock.

It's completely 3D printed along with generous amounts of primer filler and bondo gel putty. :)  I had to split all the bodies in half to print it on my ender 5 and halot resin printers.

Cool. Have you tried ABS and then acetone smoothing?

I haven't. I have modified the printer to handle high temp filaments but haven't printed with any yet.

Yep. One of the reasons I haven't bothered yet as well. That and the fumes generated printing with ABS.

Nick kindly made me a version of his Dekachron case in matt black acrylic - sleek...

I recently had the time to complete the my Dekachron. I reprinted the case after modifying the design to allow the use of heat set inserts to be used along with screws to hold it all together. Something I forgot to do before printing the last case. LOL.  I also installed LED back lighting. I think it gives the dekatrons the look of afterburning jet engines.PXL_20220107_005200542.jpgPXL_20220107_005221153.jpgPXL_20220107_022720874.jpg
