Hi all

I have a crt with what looks to be a protective plastic sleeve over the socket and gun end (pictured: https://imgur.com/9exmkCq). It isn't coming off with gentle pressure, are there any tricks other than careful destructive removal?

Thanks

I've had similar problems with two Russian CRT's and I had to use scalpel to cut them loose and then carefully peel them off as they had almost fused to the glass, probably from the plastizicer had evaporated but also left a thin film on the glass that worked almost like glue.

I tried to put them in warm water to soften them but I was afraid that they would shrink and crush the tube so I didn't use water that was hotter than from the water tap at home and that was not enough.

Hi Martin,

Thanks, that's very helpful, not least the reassurance that "it's not
just me".

I imagine that getting them off was something of a carving operation. It
definitely feels "fused".

Out of interest, what type of CRT was involved? Here's an ebay picture
of the type I bought (although I don't have yokes for mine):

Coat it with/dip it into some elasticizer and wait?

If all else fails try a hot X-Acto knife.

Most importantly, did you get the CRT working? If so, I could probably
learn from your project!

Further to that, does anyone know of a source to the smaller anode clips
- as the CRT has an anode socket about 4.8mm in diameter. This is
smaller than the common type, I think.

Hi

You do find them occasionally but normally attached to a CRT already.

I've made PDA connectors using springy phosphor bronze and 3D printed
cups using a flexible plastic like Ninjaflex. With care you can produce
a convincing looking connector.

Hi,

Update on this, was able to remove the cap with only a few small cuts by
X-acto blade. Still reusable as a cap.

Thanks again

Another issue with this crt is finding the smaller anode plugs. The hole
is about 4.8mm diameter. Has anyone come up with a good spring clip type
solution for these smaller anode sockets? Have been searching for parts
online without much luck.

Thanks for any advice,

Found a pretty good solution: 7mm hose clip
