Today on eBay, we have this lovely magic eye tube:

After the classic 6E5 (the one that actually looks like an eye) this is the most common type of magic eye tube. A similar Chinese NOS 6E2 can be had for $10. It's junk but none of them last forever.

If you're interested, here's a fantastic web site with tons of info and animations of the patterns:

Yeah, I shared that link before but it may be of interest to someone who didn't see it.

I don't mean to criticize a seller whose first language isn't English but the price is a tad high. o_O

Yeah, I have one of their EM83's along with a few other goodies.

I didn't realize they had a web site. That seems to be a thing now.

For those who have magic eye tubes, how many hours of operation have you gotten from them ?

I salvaged a 6E5 from a radio about 50 years ago, and it's dead (filament is OK; assuming phosphor is depleted), and I have a few 6AF6 (twice as cool as a 6E5....guess why....), but I'm fearful of using them too much because the phosphor is reported to burnout after a few hundred hours. I've tested one, and it's fine, and look forward to using it sometime soon.
