I picked these up at a surplus house in the 70s!

I have 3.  Free to anyone!

That's adorable!

It reminds me of some little voltage clipper tubes I bought from a surplus outfit, and found they look just like little neons, but they light up purple.

Purple is cool.  I have one from an old dishwasher that has a florescent coating and it lights green!

I love purple. How is a voltage clipper tube used?

I love purple. How is a voltage clipper tube used?

They work like many gas tubes, they're insulating until the breakover voltage is reached, then they ionize and conduct, which limits the voltage.  They're used to protect electronics from voltage spikes.  Most of the ones these days are boring ceramic ones, instead of the cute little glass ones like that.

The only vendor I've found that lists the glass ones these days is Okaya, but I'm not having a lot of luck actually buying any.
