I was searching the archives today on another topic and came upon this one again. Has anybody found one (or more) of these yet? Dieter? Nick? Jens? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

In fact, I know a person here in Germany who had one of these LD-738
tubes. He said he got it from his uncle, who was workimng at a NEC
related company well up to the seventies before he retired. The LD-738
he has does not have an imprint or a label, but the size fits, as well
as the outer appearance with respect to the one single picture there is
of the LD-738 in the datasheets. However, this specimen is believed to
be a prototype, or a demonstrational sample for exhibitions - he claims
it to be dysfunctional. Furthermore, I think it was his uncle who told
him that NEC never went into mass production with these - but then
again, why is this tube in the datasheets?
To my grief, though, he has sold it for quite a stash of money to a
Japanese person before he could take a picture for me. I am working on
getting this Japanese person's email address, but correspondence has
proven difficult.
I will let you folks know when I succeed in obtaining a picture.
All the best,
Jens

Even today it is not uncommon for manufacturers to publish data on tentative products to see if
there is any market interest.
