A few months ago, I designed a Nixie instrument panel for my Corvair.
I got it almost all built, then some telescope projects stole my
brain. I finally finished those projects, and took a day to get the
Nixie display board running. It worked right away after fixing a
couple software bugs.
The controller uses a Teensy 3.2, and will live in a box in the engine
compartment where all the engine sensors are located. There is an
RS-422 SPI data link. I used 74HC595 shift registers and TD62083
driver arrays in a direct-drive design. The tubes are NL-4998 and
NL-5870. It runs from 9V that's regulated on the controller board,
using TaylorEdge HV supplies hiding behind the 5870s.
I'm happy to share the design with anyone who's interested. I will let
you know when it's installed in the car and displaying real numbers.
Bonus points if you can guess what parameter each display area is for.

RPM, Speed, outside temp, odometer, engine temp, and oil pressure ?
Quite a feat keeping a corvair alive after all these years; it's been a long time since I saw one on the street.
Isn't the corvair air-cooled ?

I got rid of my last carbureted vehicle 30 years ago, and I dont miss changing plugs & points, carb rebuilds, etc.

I built a digital tach for a Corvair many years ago and wrote it up for Radio Electronics.

heh...I get to cheat on the what the display areas are for, because I know a secret about the car (it used to be mine, after all). Oil pressure, engine temperature (using a thermocouple in one head), RPM, MPH, battery voltage, and odometer. But this is still just a guess. David didn't tell me.

such fun to look at that issue, even if this snip is enough to make
Nixie fans cry.

Very nice.

I did take notice of the termperature. Oh, and the speedometer. It's not going into a DeLorean though?

That’s brilliant. I really must reboot my attempt at a speedometer.

I love it..but then what's not to love? Nixies in a  Corvair! Will there be a Dekatron for the gas gauge?

I like it  almost as much as I would a new incarnation of the Scope Clock...!! (hope springs eternal)
