To all,

As some of you may know, Carl Ott of this forum has done a wonderful 6
digit direct-drive clock design for the B7971. I have been working
with Carl and another forum member and have had a batch of PCB’s made
per his gerber files. This has resulted in my building an open-top
version of his clock using Carl’s software which can be seen here on

also on Brian Stuckey’s site: (scroll down a bit)
http://www.tubeclockdb.com/nixie-clocks.html We have received some
inquiries about offering a kit like the clock you see here. It would
be complete with the acrylic top, drilled and tapped base plate, colon
towers and the whole nine yards. So, we’re trying to determine if
there is enough interest to make an initial run of 10 kits. We are not
sure of the selling price yet, but our driving force here is to offer
a product to the community that fills a void, not try to gouge our
brethren.

Note the aluminum fab’d bracket mounting the rotary encoder. This will
be replaced with a right angle rotary that will mount directly to the
PCB. Carl plans to do a little more tweaking to the software as well.
Also there is a fair amount of SMD component soldering involved by the
user and the kit will be offered without tubes.

I would be interested in a PCB and a copy of the software ( what chip are you using here?) . Please let me know via PM ( ja...@buechler.org) how to get the specialised pieces and / or circuit and / or overlay and other stuff.


How do you make the NEON towers - can you explain that a bit?

I am a great fan of using GPS - for the following reasons:
1.The clock can self set it self - even if the power is pulled - it will re-find the correct time. 'Very new meets old'.
2. The accuracy is Stratum 1 - and can be resynchronised every 1 second
3. GPS modules are low cost - especially serial ones like the Motorola encore which also gives a 1pps output as well.
4. Offsets are easy to use and program from UTC - could even deal with half hour offsets
5. Totally global - no issue with things like rugby or other such radio types. Good for US or European or Asian.


To this end, I am using some Smart sockets and have just started to build up the hardware nad will start the software as well to do a 6 digit nixie clock. GPS driven.

Well, I have been sitting on tubes for about a year.   Just waiting to put them into something.
 
unobtainium?  Nope, still always an auction or two on ebay.   Prices go from $50 to way up.

point we are redesigning them and have yet to have them run.

Thanks for all the GREAT feedback. There seems to be enough interest
for us to go ahead with the project and develop the kits for sale. I
expect it will take us about 2 months before everything is ready to go
and once we have a handle on our costs will post the selling prices.

eBay.   We all just watched a set (2x tubes, sockets, drivers) go for $110 total.  he had 3 extra fulls sets which he sold at the same price to the buyer.    :(

A HV kill/activate input line would be nice. These priceless tubes
have a lifetime and I would attach a motion detector to activate the
display only when someone was looking. Would keep these around longer.

Paranoia. I built three clocks (18 tubes) with B7971s that have been
running 24/7 for 30-35 years without failure. I might have gotten
lucky, but I did not do anything special for reliability or to extend
the operating life. My only concession to that issue was to purchase
spare tubes that are still waiting to be used.

Software does allow user to designate an OFF/ON period to preserve
tube life/

The data sheets were probably written after less than one year of
accelerated life tests and based on assuming certain failure modes.
I read them as the manufacturer's guarantee to the design engineer and
not actual projected failure dates based on experience. We now have
information based on 40+ years of experience in real and practical
applications.

By the way, the tubes I used were all suplus, showed obvious evidence
of previous usage (lightened areas under the wire segments), and had
probably already seen 5-15 years of service (12 hours/day, 5 days/
week).

My clocks have linear power supplies. The transformer gets warm. Any
power savings would be negligible.

Totally agree. My tubes are the same and are in sockets. Have the
whitening behind the wires. Not sure what the failure mode would be if
the vacuum/neon holds. Awaiting the kits. Thanks, N0UU
