Hey folks, hope you're all staying safe and healthy in these crazy times...

After a couple of conversations with a few members here, I thought it may be useful for others to ask what everyone's favorite (and maybe cheapest!) component suppliers are...

To get the ball rolling, here are a few I regularly use (apart from the obvious Mouser/Digikey's of the world).

eBay (obvious again)
www.goldmine-elec-products.com (great for cheap EoL stuff)
www.mpja.com (great for cheap power supplies)
www.antekinc.com (good for toroids)

Cheers,

(Pharma) Nick

I'm in the UK and if I need things in a hurry then RS Components are excellent and surprisingly well priced - free next day delivery on all stock items. After that it's Farnell then for everything else I'm happy to wait so it's ebay and Alliexpress.
https://jlcpcb.com/ - my current favourite PCB supplier

UK here too, so basically most of the above (Farnell, RS, Rapid etc.) plus we get Digikey and Mouser over here too.

I also use Banggood and AliExpress for some neat bits, especially for the IoT stuff and cute things like Raspberry pi accessories, plus I do a lot of woodworking/cabinetry so use Axminster, Timberline and other specialist suppliers for that.

I'm based in Switzerland, in addition to mouser and digikey, the german companies conrad and reichelt also offer a "swiss package". You can pay in CHF with the correct taxes and no customs fees.
Sometimes I also order components from LCSC, for example if I need 100 DS3231MZ+ :-)

I buy from all the usual online places, but there's a local old brick and mortar independent family owned electronics store in Needham, MA called You Do It Electronics I like to support. That place is great, it's like stepping back in time to RadioShack in the 70s. They sell online too.

Nick - How much business have you done on AliExpress ? I've only bought 1 item (box of 1000 green NE-2 bulbs), and the sale was fine, but I've heard concerns some sellers aren't vetted like they are on Ebay.

There is a lot of really neat industrial product available, and I'd like to purchase more, but I'm a bit too cautious to jump-in.

For odd ICs and other semiconductors, unicorn-electronics is GREAT!

Gregbert - I have made about 30 Aliexpress purchases and have yet to have a problem, it's just that you need to know what you want 40 days in advance due to the delivery times.

Actually, I meant to say Alibaba which is the parent company. Anyways, thanks for letting me know you've had no problems.

I've made maybe 15 or 20 purchases and never had a problem. You have to wait maybe a month to 6 weeks, but generally no problem.

Banggood have a load of pretty cute stuff, some of it the same as AliExpress, and they have a UK (and probably a US) warehouse too. I bought a really nice Pi 4 heatsink and it took 3 days to come, like I ordered last week during lockdown and it still took just a few days.

I purchase most of my stuff from Digikey and Adafruit, with a few items from Aliexpress.  I've never had a problem with Aliexpress, just keep in mind the long lead times (~6 weeks).
I've also used Pololu Robotics and Electronics, http://www.pololu.com
They have a laser-cutting service that has come in handy.

Weird and wonderful hardware: https://www.mcmaster.com/
Another electronics site, seem especially good for transformers: https://www.arrow.com/

I’m surprised no one has mentioned https://octopart.com/, which shows prices from multiple sources. I guess I don’t use it much either, but I should - it also has BOM manager.

I use octopart to find weird components out of production. Good place to look Paul!

Have to say that recently I keep coming back to Mouser, despite the lousy GBP/USD exchange rate. They just seem to have more components tuned to the things I'm trying to make - fewer design compromises than if I try to manage within the usual UK-domiciled suspects like Farnell & RS. They also do free Fedex for all orders above a pretty modest threshold, which is much appreciated during these screwed-up times when the regular post is suffering from the reduction in scheduled air travel - Fedex just keep on trucking with their own planes. Oh, and for one or two specific things I've gone to Rapid Electronics as well.

Jon.
