Greetings!

Just a heads-up on a few changes...

I've not done much with the group for 10 years, and it's time for a small refresh...

Please welcome Grahame Marsh and Nick Stock as moderators, joining John Smout & myself. Both are well known to the group and have a deep understanding of the technologies involved...

...apart from that, Nick has a great first name and happens to share my birthday !

Grahame and I have have been swapping emails for many many years and he and Nick have worked (and are working) on some great projects. Yes, I know we're all British (though Nick S. lives in the USA, Grahame in Scotland and I've lived in the Middle East for the last few years - at least John S. lives in London!)

The library re-organisation will restart (my fault for just getting distracted) and we're open to ideas from all and sundry about what we could do to improve the group...

All the best

Hi All

Just to introduce myself as some of you may not know me.  I lurk a lot and I'm not a prolific poster to the group. But I read everything that is posted avidly.

My background is that I'm a chemical engineer and worked for a chemical company in the UK, USA and Canada for about 20 years, then I moved into (criminal) law enforcement in the UK. I'm now retired so have lots of time spare, at least in theory. Nick is generous in saying "a deep understanding of the technologies" as my knowledge is all self-taught - both electronics design and writing software.

We live near Drumnadrochit on the north bank of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. At the moment we are half way through renovating and extending a stone cottage. The work has been interrupted by a number of things, the last, and most serious, as been the virus when Scottish domestic building went into lockdown. So at the moment my workshop is all boxed up and in storage. Hopefully we'll be in the new house by Christmas!

My web site is http://www.sgitheach.org.uk/ , my radio amateur call sign is GM4EKI (everything is boxed and in storage) and you can find me on Instagram as grahame_marsh. All good fun.

I'm looking forward to helping Nick deS and the other moderators when I have learned my duties!

cheers Grahame

Hello everyone, I can't let Grahame have all the fun...

Many folks on the list have chatted/conversed/traded etc with me at some point in time and I'm more than happy to help the other British Nick run things as smoothly as possible! I feel lucky in that I've made quite a few firm friends around the world through this hobby/obsession and hope to continue making more.

As some of you are aware, I'm a medicinal chemist by training, but my dad was an EE (now retired), so I grew up around 'cool stuff'...well, I thought it was cool, my wife just rolls her eyes... :)

Once I got a real job ($$), I found Mike Harrison's website (http://www.electricstuff.co.uk), quickly followed by Jeff Thomas' (RIP) website and the rest is very much downhill (and increasingly expensive...).

I have a website in the works (still...) where I hope to collate a lot of things nixie/neon/vfd/numitron/crt/you name it, with the occasional thing for sale too...I'm not talented enough to design things from scratch, but I'm not bad at case design/general fabrication and now know my way around a circuit or two.... :)

Cheers,

(Pharma) Nick

A huge welcome to Grahame and Nick as new co-moderators.

It is to the credit of group members that there have been very few heated debates or disputes over the many years of neonixie-l's lifetime. Long may this continue, although healthy disagreement and lively debate is, I am sure, to be welcomed.

A big personal thank you to Nicko for maintaining the group in past years and being such a generous person with his wealth of knowledge.

I, John Smout, am on the left and Nick de Smith is on the right. We are showing off our David Forbes Cathode Corner nixie watches, plus a few of my silly clock ideas.

Argh! That dodgy, 70s porn star moustache !!

I need to explain. Really, I do... Firstly that photo was from many years ago...

It started during a "Movember" men's health fundraising effort - for those that don't know, Movember is where (mostly) guys try to grow an outrageous moustache during the month of November - the wilder and more unlikely the better - mine ended up like Zapata's. All for charity...

I was working for a financial services company in London and they agreed to double the money if you got your photo on an official document... driving licence and passport in my case... It was worth a lot of money for charity - many 1000s of GBP...

Thankfully, sanity was restored and it's long gone now - even it's absence caused problems. Passports last 10 years here and the last few years I've been based in the Gulf (UAE) and doing a lot of travelling. Every border I crossed they had problems with the passport photo vs. reality.

It was a silly idea and I now have a new passport and driving license, both with sensible images!

BTW. My watch is a pre-production one - it has no serial number... and I still wear it occasionally...

Movember is a good cause, I've done a few of those campaigns myself and grown a pretty outrageous handlebar much to the horror of all those around me... :) Only I have the photo....LOL. But for a couple of CD47's, I'd post it here.... ha ha!!

Cheers,
