PhD student for 'The acquisition of Polish coronal consonants' project (1,0 fte)

Radboud University Nijmegen
Faculty of Arts
Vacancy number: 23.49.08
Closing date: 13 December 2008

Job description

The Polish coronal fricative system is highly interesting from a number of linguistic perspectives. From a typological and theoretical perspective it is interesting because it contains three different contrasting coronal fricatives, an alveolar, a retroflex and an alveolopalatal one and, in addition, a coronal fricative in a palatalizing context which is problematic for every known feature analysis. It is also problematic from a language acquisition perspective, because the coronal articulation place cannot remain unspecified during acquisition.

This project studies this system from the perspectives of theoretical analysis and acquisition and aims at providing a better insight into the phonological representation of fricatives. A major focus will be on the detailed study of the acquisition of Polish for which the 'preferential looking paradigm' method is used.
