Temporarily Offline If your computer is temporarily offline (travel, internet connection issues etc.), simply go online within 7 days of the first launch of your Adobe product to complete an online activation and registration.
Permanently Offline If your computer is permanently offline (i.e. secure environments like government, banking etc.) you need to complete an offline activation within 7 days of the first launch of the software otherwise it will stop working. You need an internet enabled device and your product's serial number to complete this process.

I store my valuable PDF files for reading on my home NAS drive. When I wake my netbook up, the file I had been reading before going to sleep goes offline even though it is accessible. The pages of the PDF are blank until I re-open the file.
So if you find nothing related to this in Acrobat settings, try a few other PDF reader apps. Adobe Reader, Adobe Reader add-in for Firefox, the integrated PDF reader in Google Chrome and Nitro PDF are some I can think off.
I work in healthcare for a non-profit and currently use the newest XA LTSR with only published apps. We have a need for our providers to have Adobe Acrobat. I installed Adobe Acrobat on each Application server and was going to publish Acrobat to our providers. Before I even got to that point, now intermittently having printing issues. The printers will go offline to the users all on one application server and can not print at all. After a reboot of that application server everything goes back to working. Any heading on where to look for this besides uninstalling Adobe Acrobat?
I use Foxit Reader for tasks like that even though Sumatra has become my main PDF reader.
I also recently heard about XODO which is completely free and seems very powerful though I have not tried it yet.
It is fairly basic but adequate and since it is linked to online use I find it a bit slow but may suit many users with the ability to highlight draw and overtype plus add comment boxs that work with SumatraPDF. To download books for offline access, you will firstly need Adobe Digital Editions a free program that is different than Adobe Reader. If using a mobile device, the Adobe Digital Editions App is free from the Apple App Store and Google Play. You can use other reader apps as long as they are able to handle the Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management). Search in the app store of your choice for e.g. 'adobe drm reader' or just 'adobe drm' to get a list of potentially suitable apps.
You do need an Adobe ID simply to read a downloaded book on one device. You can get an Adobe ID for free if you wish to transfer your downloaded eBook from one device to another. You will not need an Adobe ID if you continue to read it on the same device.

By "dropbox" do you mean the product "DropBox?" If so, you can also select a file in that app and choose to download it locally so you can access it offline. Though the "reader" part of DropBox may not be as nice as Books. You can do the same thing in the Files app on your iPad if the PDF is in iCloud Drive, or even if it is in DropBox, which Files also shows. Just make sure you download it first before you go offline.
Thanks Gary. Hopefully what I have accomplished with your help will be the solution..being out of range of wifi, both the Books app and Dropbox app indicated no connection and would not load anything. Files are now in "Files" folder. Also chose the "available offline" option in Dropbox app.
I have found the GoodReader app a very useful one for pdf files. It is a paid for app, but has many features beyond just being a storage location for pdf files. What I like especially is the way I can organize the files I save inside the app for use offline. A common use for me is to see some useful webpage and then use the print feature to load for printing. Then, using a two finger gesture on the image to be printed, I am given the option to save in GoodReader.
