Back in the present, Sophie is eventually removed from the case when it's discovered that her father, a former POW, had North Korean ties during the Korean War, thus technically making her a non-neutral. Before leaving Korea, she attempts to informally learn of the true events first with Kyeong-pil and then Soo-hyeok. Having asked Kyeong-pil if he had a message for Soo-hyeok, Sophie gives Soo-hyeok the lighter he first gave to Kyeong-pil. Before saying goodbye and wishing him well, she reveals that Kyeong-pil told her that he saw Soo-hyeok's gun actually shot Woo-jin first during the chaos before Sung-shik shot him. On his way out, Soo-hyeok steals an officer's pistol and commits suicide out of guilt for Woo-jin's death and Sung-shik's suicide attempt. The film concludes with an American tourist's photograph of the joint security area that accidentally contains all four soldiers prior to the incident.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone depicted in the movie were sets that were made for the film, which was constructed at about 8000-Pyeong area in a film studio in Namyangju[a] with a budget of 900 million won.[3]

The JSA has been the site of numerous events and incidents since its establishment in 1953, the first of which was the repatriation of prisoners of war (POWs) after the cessation of hostilities, across the Bridge of No Return. In 2018, North and South Korean officials agreed to clear the JSA of all landmines, weapons and guard posts. This withdrawal was complete on October 25, 2018, and the JSA now just contains 35 unarmed security guards.[3][4][5][6] It was further agreed that henceforth, the area will serve mainly as a tourist attraction.[7][8][9][10] On November 6, 2018, it was announced that the UNC would transfer primary guard duties of the now demilitarized Joint Security Area to both North and South Korea.[11][12]

Among the provisions of the Korean Armistice Agreement signed July 27, 1953, to bring a cease-fire in the Korean War, was establishment of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC), an agency to supervise implementation of the truce terms. Meetings of MAC representatives from the United Nations Command (UNC) and the Korean People's Army/Chinese People's Volunteers (KPA/CPV) were held at the Joint Security Area, an 800-meter (2600 ft) wide enclave, roughly circular in shape, bisected by the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) separating South and North Korea, and created as a neutral area, where there was free movement of both sides anywhere within the JSA boundaries.[14]

While the boundary has remained the same over the years, the buildings themselves have changed. Some have been removed, including all of the KPA checkpoints on the southern half of the JSA. New buildings have been constructed, whilst some existing buildings have been expanded or simply renovated. The only boundary change of the Joint Security Area was the enforcement of the dividing line within the JSA after the murders of two American officers in 1976. Prior to this, the entire area was neutral, where members of either side possessed the freedom of movement within the JSA.

Both sides placed guards between the blue meeting houses, where the demarcation line is marked by blocks of concrete. South Korean guards in this area were armed with pistols and they stood in a modified taekwondo stance with stolid facial expressions, clenched fists and sunglasses, which was meant to intimidate the North Korean guards. The South Korean guards had to be at least 170 cm (5'7") tall[20][21] and have a black belt in taekwondo or judo.

Since October 25, 2018, guards in the Joint Security area no longer have pistols.[22][23] They are also required to maintain a capacity no larger than 35 people and must be unarmed.[23][22] Freedom of movement across the border must also be enforced for visitors and tourists at some point as well.[24][22]

On November 6, 2018, both Koreas and the UNC established new rules which called for, among other things, the transfer of guard duty command to both Koreas for each of their respective sides of the area.[11][12]

The Joint Security Area currently has around 100,000 tourists visit each year through several tourism companies[84][85] and the USO[86] (through the various U.S. military commands in Korea). Before being allowed to enter the DMZ, if visiting from the South, tourists are given a briefing during which they must sign a document which states, in part, "The visit to the Joint Security Area at Panmunjom will entail entry into a hostile area and possibility of injury or death as a direct result of enemy action."[87][88][89] During a meeting held between the UN command and military officers from North and South Korea on the South Korean side of Panmunjom on October 16, 2018,[75][76] it was agreed the Joint Security Area disarmament is complete, civilian and foreign tourists will be allowed to visit the border area from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. without restrictions about what they can wear.[10] It was agreed that at this point, the Military Demarcation Line which runs through the Joint Security Area will be open to local and foreign tourists so they can reenact Kim and Moon's crossing which occurred on April 27, 2018.[7][73][90] This withdrawal was complete on October 25, though tourism has been delayed.[22] No date was set for the resumption of Joint Security Area tourism when rules were established for the transfer of guard duty command on November 6, 2018 as well.[11]

Recovering almost immediately from their initial surprise, at least fifteen more KPA soldiers armed with Type 68 assault rifles ran across the MDL in pursuit of the defector. The two JSF soldiers ran toward Matuzok, hoping to bring him inside UNC Checkpoint Number 4. Matuzok continued to run south across an open area past the decorative Sunken Garden and into a low marshy area just north of the road that led to the Bridge of No Return, where he hid from his pursuers. One of the JSF soldiers ran inside Checkpoint Number 4 to alert the soldiers there while the other continued on to Checkpoint Number 2 to spread the alarm. Simultaneously, Private First Class Richard Howard, observing the JSA from the second floor of Checkpoint Number 4, pressed the alarm button to alert both the JSA and Camp Kitty Hawk. All of this took less than thirty seconds.

Members of the 2023 United Nations Korean War Veterans Descendants Camp also visited the Joint Security Area and Demilitarized Zone and learned more about continuing efforts to secure critical areas throughout the Korean Peninsula, secure diplomatic communications with North Korea, and build trust and confidence with the North Korean military.

Seoul's defense ministry said Thursday the area has been disarmed as North, South Korea and the United Nations Command withdrew firearms, ammunition, guard posts and armed personnel, according to Yonhap News.Advertisement

The area has been a symbol of military tension and confrontation between North and South Korea. Security was enhanced after North Korean troops attacked U.S. military officers and guard soldiers on Aug. 18, 1976.

Officials said the JSA will now be guarded by disarmed North and South Korean personnel at new posts. The area had been patrolled by 80 North and South Korean soldiers before it was disarmed. The number of guard personnel will reduce to 35.

Just 30 miles southeast from the real truce village of Panmunjom, KOFIC Namyangju Studio has built a replica of the joint security area, complete with the iconic blue container structures and the demarcation line, for film-making purposes in 1998.

But the Namyangju Studio's Panmunjom movie set gives tourists an opportunity for Instagram-worthy photos and social media posts, unlike the actual Panmunjom where tourists can only get a glimpse of the handshake area from afar or from inside the blue huddles looking out the window. Visitors to the KOFIC Namyangju Studio could physically stand between the demarcation line, just like Moon and Kim did, and freely take photos.
