scan tools

Am looking for info on what scan/diagnostic tool to buy to help diagnos DTC on our ambulances.  Had a service charging system message and battery light come on after breaking a belt--came to find out it set a code with my scan tool did not pick up--had to take to a dealer to reset.  I have the VCM with IDS for our Fords, but no compatible with Chevy.  Would like to find the right tool to scan DTC's, diagnos and clear after problem is corrected.  am not looking to tune or create more performance.  Just wanting to keep from haveing to go to dealer for every diagnostic problem when I can
