Mike,
The
Nahant Knuckleheads meet every Sunday, except in case of blizzard, year-round to swim (or plunge) at Long Beach on Nahant, by the Tides restaurant.
Currently, we're just meeting to plunge - the water is still high 30s, low 40s. It's a good way to build up cold-water tolerance, as well as expanding your repertoire for creative profanity. Once the water warms up enough to permit extended swimming (late spring, summer, and fall) the swims are typically a mile or more. In the past, there have been some longer destination swims (from the Tides to Red Rock Park in Lynn, from Phillips Beach in Swampscott to Devereaux Beach in Marblehead, and I think we're trying to see if there's a way to organize a swim this year from Nahant out to Egg Rock and back).
Most of us swim sans wetsuit, but wearing one will not result in open mockery. Swims/plunges are typically followed by donuts and coffee at the nearby Dunkins. There's no membership fee, and signing up entails only joining the email listserve.
email me off-list if you have any other questions.
regards,
James Haynes
