I have just tested that Nemo works on the Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 10.

The install takes a while, but it is all essentially a one off installation. Obviously some familiarity with how to use Linux is required. At some point I hope we can produce some how-tos to cover the basics.

In the mean time, for those familiar with basic Linux operation, here is what to do:

* Install the WSL [1]

* Increase the Windows Pagefile size to at least 16384mb, with a maximum size of four times that if you can afford the disk space, i.e. 65536mb. This step cannot be skipped.

- Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings
- Advanced
- Performance: Settings
- Advanced
- Virtual Memory -> Change
- Custom Size -> {insert the sizes given above}
- Set and Apply

* Start up a terminal (cmd.exe)

* bash (this essentially just a standard Ubuntu distribution)

At this point I also installed latex, gcc, autotools, m4 and anything else I thought I might need using apt-get.

* Download and install a Julia-0.5.0 or Julia-0.6.0dev Generic Linux Binary from the Julia download page. (N.B: do not use apt-get for this, and do not use the Ubuntu PPA for Julia.) The Julia Nightly needs to be given a .tar.gz extension

* Follow the instructions on the Nemo website to install and use Nemo

(Note that Nemo no longer supports Julia-0.4.x. though the Julia-0.4.6 Gneric Linux binary seems to work on the WSL.)

----

This is all great news for us, as Singular and Gap are not available on Windows, but they should run with Julia in the Subsystem for Linux.

If you get stuck, send us your error messages and we'll see what we can do to help you.

Bill.
