Hi all,

I have been in contact with The Free House about hiring the yurt for our Tavern Revel in February.  They have a booking for the 25th, but the 18th is free.

I’ve said we’d have 20-30 people.  They say that if we buy our drinks from them (such a hardship!) they would charge us $50 for hire.  Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

So, I suggest we change the date to the 18th and book the yurt.  I’d also suggest that though we’d discussed this being a members only event last year, that we change that and make this open to family and friends, as the venue and the good beer may attract a few newbies and people who have expressed interest in joining the group.

What say you?

ok that's great Yvonne, let us know and I'll book you in.

We'd probably just charge a nominal $50 to cover cleaning etc - how does that sound?

Cheers Mic

Sounds great but we have a gig in the yurt that night. Sat Feb 18th is free though...

We are planning a medieval tavern night and thought the yurt would be the perfect place.  I would expect 20-30 people.  (What is the yurt’s capacity?)  Part of the attraction is the great beer you have, so we’d be drinking that.  I think we’d be looking at bringing our own food (bread and cheese and other vaguely medieval finger food), but could look at other options for food.

We’d be bringing along some board games etc for entertainment.

At this point we’re looking at Saturday 25th February.  Probably from 6pm onwards.  There would be a few children attending also.

Hi Yvonne,

Absolutely, yes we do hire out the yurt.

Fees depend on type of event, number of people and other stuff like food and drink. It can even be free if Free House drinks sales are involved!

What kind of event did you have in mind?

Cheers Mic

Hi,

Just wondering if it’s possible to hire the yurt for a private event?  And if so, what are the fees?

Thanks.

That would be ok with us.  I will however beg to be excused setting up as the 18th is my birthday.

All the more reason to party!  I’m sure that won’t be a problem.  J

As no-one has objected, I’ll book the 18th with the Free House.  Alli can you update the website with the new date, please?

So, spread the word to your friends and family and anyone who might like to come see what we’re about!

Just thinking, to make it easier, do we want to just have a person at the door to take money rather than do tickets in advance?  What price do we want to set?  $5 with a discount for members, to $3?  Or make it $3 for everyone (considering people have to buy their beer from the Free House).

I’ll also ask about music facilities and see if I can put together some medieval-esque party music.  Something lively and not too scary for newcomers.

Here’s the invite I propose to send out – just have to add the correct cost to it.

Tavern Revel at the Free House

Saturday 18 February

6pm onwards

Bring a plate of medieval finger food and sample the fine Free House ales in the fragrant environs of the yurt.  No BYO.

Bring medieval games and don your tavern garb.

You may wish to hang a posie around your neck to ward off the evil humours…

There will be incentives (of the sugary kind) for those who wish to entertain with a tale or a song, or a display of acrobatic skill.

Cost $X.  Pay at the door.

The Free House, 95 Collingwood Street, Nelson.

Hi All

I have had quotes for an awning measuring 8 x 7  m from 3 places as follows:

Nyberg/Nelson Upholstery        $1627.00 including GST (includes water proofing, which is $345.00)
                                   Canvas duck
                                   Obtained by email

Transport and Marine             $1575 plus GST using cotton duck and waterproofed
$1945 plus GST using 10oz canvas and waterproofed
                                   Obtained by email

Scott and Williams               $800.00 (incl gst? - would have to check on that) 12oz cotton canvas
On this one I know he sells waterproofing, so I asked how much
it would cost for us to buy it and apply it ourselves - it would be
$185.00, so the total would be about $1000.00
                                   Obtained by telephone

The third one seems to be the best deal, and I don't see why we can't have a bit of a working bee to apply waterproofing ourselves - we have done it on our blue tent and our own awning, with perfectly good results. I would like to see the fabric before going ahead just to check it is OK, or someone else can. Mike and I are away as of Saturday for two weeks, so it depends if you want to go ahead sooner than that.

There will be other expenses involved with getting the awning up and running - ropes and steel pegs. Mike could make the latter, but would need to be reimbursed for the materials of course. He thinks it would cost about $60- ish.

Thoughts??

Cheers
Kate

Are steel pegs authentic?  I'm sure they'd be easier to use than wood and have no problem with paying for them.  But perhaps we should consider wooden ones (kinder if you happen to walk into one).

Is canvas and cotton the same material? As I am pretty sure I too would vote for the $800 offer as it is 12oz, which is a much stronger material. No problems with re-imbursing Mike.
I have no idea about waterproofing, so I relly on yours and Boyds oppinion, I guess you guys are the only ones that have any experience around that.

Cheers,
Markus

Can the waterproofing be applied by air spraying? If so, we have the gear ;) might save a bit of time!

Are new-fangled chemicals allowed or should we do it the 'proper' way, feeding an ocelot on loganberries for a fortnight and then fermenting it's wee (or whatever)?

Don't know about authenticity - possibly, but wooden ones were apparently. The thing about wooden pegs is that they don't really work in stoney ground - the ends blunt and get wrecked. They are fine in softer ground. What we often do is tie white tags around the ends of the ropes so they catch peoples eye, and show up in the dark. But we could have a set of steel pegs and a set of wooden ones if people were really keen... !

From memory the water proofing is quite thick - don't think spraying would work. It wouldn't take too long for a small number of people to apply it with a brush :-)

Would it be cheating to try to rig steel pegs with wooden tops?

I'd wondered about that - if we use 10mm (say) steel pegs then it would be straightforward to bore 10mm holes in some fake peg-tops and slip them over once the real ones are in place.  Far kinder to my toes when I stumble into one in the dark.

I suppose I've hereby volunteered myself to come up with the goods :-)

Cheers,
