Albuca bruce-bayeri, a beautiful small winter-growing bulb, is native to the Little Karoo of the Western Cape. Its unique green leaves form an upward spiral like a corkscrew, and its nodding flowers appear in autumn, making it an eye-catching and unique addition to any garden.
With the exception of the much-branched Echinocactus polycephalus, species of Echinocactus in the flora area are almost never branched, and will die instead of producing a lateral bud when the apex is injured. Smaller than normal fruits of Echinocactus are usually aborted and hollow as the result of infestation by insect larvae (M. Chamberland, pers. comm.).
The ironwood habitat in the Silver Bell Mountains is associated with more than 674 species, including 64 mammals and 57 bird species, and several species listed as threatened or endangered. The area contains historic and potential habitat for the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl. The desert bighorn sheep in the monument may represent the last viable population indigenous to the Tucson basin.
