John's mention of the LN2 rocket reminded me of the hydrogen rocket
I've been playing with. It's quite fun, although it's not really a
rocket but a projectile (the hydrogen combustion occurs in a chamber
on the ground and the "rocket" is shot upward....not a self-propelled
vehicle).

The hydrogen gas is generated by electrolysis. I've gotten some
really good height out of it, although it takes some time to generate
the hydrogen before each launch. I haven't reached significantly
diminishing returns on the ratio of fuel to elevation, and I've tested
it in steps up to about 9.5 mins of gas generation. My max height for
that was about 100 ft.....not bad at all.

I'm going to try to bring it in to school one of these days to play
with in the University Commons. If anyone is interested in testing
with me (I could use some help to get elevation measurements), let me
know.
