Seattle Policymakers Microhousing Tour
Earlier this week, Liz Pisciotta from our office had the opportunity to help lead city policymakers on a tour of micro housing projects. The aim of the tour was to show examples of micro housing, from historical Single Room Occupancy (SRO) buildings to today's SEDU and Congregate Housing. Our goal was to highlight the need for affordable market-rate housing solutions and to demonstrate how Seattle's regulatory choices have negatively affected our ability to produce this housing.
For many years, I have been talking about the importance of micro housing as an important tool in the affordability toolkit. All the while, the city has made a series of poor policy decisions that have made micro housing scarcer and less affordable. While it's been clear to me that many policymakers understand the issue and agree on the substance, what's been missing is the willingness of politicians to expend the political capital needed to turn the boat around. This year, that appears to be changing. The explicit purpose of the tour was to engage leaders from different city agencies and power centers in order to prepare them to join the mayor's effort to enact a set of policy prescriptions and legislation to make micro housing more plentiful and affordable.
