Anti-Bullying Program at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd

Dear Nancy, Michelle, Sue, Gerry and Peg, Eleanor, Rev. Barb, Jerry, and Neighbors for Equality interested persons,

I talked to LeighAnn Stinson this morning who is the Youth Director for Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and she suggested we plan to do a late summer or early fall anti-bullying program at their church open to the youth of the community.  They would like to host it, but she would like help on putting it together and doing it.  Perhaps other churches and community organizations  would want to get involved, too.   I told her I would tell those of you who have offered to help with such a program, and I am including others who may be interested.  We have offers of loans of dvds such as “Let’s Get Real” and the Southern Poverty Law Center’s  anti-bullying dvd, also.  Mr. Jeter is the head of the local martial arts and he and his wife are available to do an anti-bullying program for $5 a child that they did for the community through Parks and Rec. (and maybe another church sponsor also helped with that) 2 weeks ago. It would require a few people working with LeighAnn to create this program of dvds and discussions and/or Mr. Jeter’s program and/or ??    I would like to move on to other areas where I can make an impact on anti-bullying so I have written LeighAnn’s e-mail address in the cc box above so you all could communicate directly with her.  I will help in any way on the sidelines so feel free to bounce anything off me you want, but I would love to see what you might all create in this coming together for this common challenge.  Dr. McDaris (superintendent of Transylvania County Schools) started this ball rolling when he asked Eleanor Mockridge and I to contact church youth groups to help educate our children about bullying when we went to see him a month ago and he spent 70 minutes with us brainstorming about how our community (school, churches, sports programs, etc) can increase our effectiveness on anti-bullying.  “It takes a village” is very appropriate here.  The schools are actively trying to educate about bullying and this would be another support of that education.
