Dear Neighbors,

Tomorrow at 9:30 AM the PHED (Planning, Housing, and Economic Development) Committee will meet at the County Council (3rd floor hearing room) to discuss the Zoning Rewrite, and, specifically, an important memo that Councilmember Valerie Ervin has written to the Chair of the PHED Committee, Nancy Floreen.  Please attend if you are able, or watch the proceedings on Montgomery County Cable.

We thank Councilmember Ervin for her insightful memo, and for starting a real dialogue about what we believe are some unnecessary and unsettling changes in the proposed new code—particularly in the agricultural and single-family residential zones.

Specifically, Councilmember Ervin states:

The majority of agricultural and single-family residential [zones] have no significant potential for further development, so there are no             compelling reasons to change the zones and the standards that apply to             those areas.  (Emphasis added.)

We agree with that statement 100%, and believe that the Council, when it takes up the residential zones, should leave the single-family residential zones completely alone—make no changes!

I am attaching a separate copy of Valerie Ervin’s memo, as well as the Staff Report for the PHED session tomorrow. countymd.gov/content/council/pdf/agenda/cm/2013/130405/20130405_PHED1.pdf
Her memo is a significant development—an experienced Council member has recognized the concerns that we citizens have been expressing from the beginning. Further, the timing of her memo is important—while the Planning Board is reviewing the process for rezoning of the County—and the Council is awaiting the transmittal of the new code. Transmittal is now supposed to be in early May.

See you tomorrow,

Meredith

P.S.  As we requested in January, the Planning Board now has hard copies of the proposed new code available at the Planning Board Information Desk.  The copies are free, and we thank the Planning Board very much for making them available.
