Dear Neighbors,
First, more information on the Zoning Rewrite work session schedule: The work sessions on the residential zones will be held on Thursday, October 25th (not the 18th), and Monday, October 29th. The October 25th work session starts at 9:00 AM. The October 29th work session starts at 7:00 pm. See you there. Second, I am attaching an important letter that the Seven Oaks Evanswood Citizens’ Association sent to Councilmember Valerie Ervin on October 8th about serious storm water management issues on the Chelsea School site where 63 townhouses have been approved. The issues deal with runoff on steep, highly-erodible slopes and the removal of almost all of the wooded area on the site, and the concomitant environmental impacts on Sligo Creek and the Anacostia Watershed.
The important issue for the entire County is: How does Montgomery County through Park and Planning and the Department of Permitting Services (DPS) enforce storm water management standards? Is there confusion as to the allocation of responsibilities? What is DPS’s obligation to abide by State standards designed to protect the water shed? Can DPS restrict the number of units that may be built if that is the only way to comply with State standards?
Problems with storm water management have existed in this County for a long time. How many of us experienced water in the basement after a new development went in? Maybe it’s time to take a closer look at this topic.
