MEDIA ALERT – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, 15 June 2007
STATEMENT ON ESSENTIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE RULING AND WORKERS SALARIES
National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) welcome the ruling of Essential Services Committee that Immigration Officers in level 5, 6 and 7 are not essential service workers. This effectively means that the interdict by government is now over and workers can strike. The ruling excludes level 8 and above (mainly at the management level), who are considered as essential services. This ruling is interim.
Meanwhile, despite government’s assurances last night that workers salaries will not be tampered with, some provinces are still withholding workers salaries. In Gauteng all salaries of the workers in the health sector have not being paid. This situation is becoming desperate and could turn to violence. In Eastern Cape, some workers are being given three-days pay, and others not paid all at.
This is unacceptable and we strongly condemn this illegal action of government and have taken urgent interdict against government. We further say that heads must roll for those who caused this chaotic situation.
