Subject: [Bulk] Fwd: Potential Severe Weather Tuesday & Wednesday
Gentlemen;
FYI - please disseminate to your members
From: Nikole Winstead Listemaa - NOAA
...Strong to Severe Storms Possible Tuesday into Wednesday...
Sloppy travel conditions are looking more and more likely during the mid-week as a potent weather system impacts much of Georgia. This complicated weather pattern is expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region and scattered snow showers across far north Georgia.
What Has Changed Since Your Last Email:
The weather system has slowed down a bit and it looks like isolated severe thunderstorms are possible both Tuesday and Wednesday.
What:
Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible both Tuesday & Wednesday. The scattered snow showers are expected behind the cold front overnight Wednesday into very early Thursday morning.
When:
There should be two rounds of thunderstorms. The first round of storms is expected mainly Tuesday afternoon and evening along and south of a warm front. The second round of storms is expected between 6 AM and 8 PM on Wednesday along and ahead of the cold front.
Scattered snow showers are likely behind the cold front late Wednesday evening into very early Thursday morning.
Where:
Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of south central Georgia on Tuesday, along and south of a warm front. North of the warm front, thunderstorms are possible, but severe weather is not anticipated at this time.
The strong to severe thunderstorms could develop anywhere ahead of the cold front on Wednesday!
Snow flurries/showers are possible across far north Georgia.
(A graphic with more details about locations & timing is attached.)
Storm Impacts:
Strong winds just above the surface will increase the likelihood of damaging wind gusts within any severe thunderstorm that develops. Also, the strong winds aloft will increase wind shear, an element needed for the development of isolated tornadoes.
If the strong winds mix down to the surface (outside of the thunderstorms), downed trees and powerlines are also possible, especially with saturated soils.
Rainfall totals of 1” to 3” are possible. (A graphic with more details is attached.)
Little, if any, snowfall accumulation is expected across far north Georgia.
Travel Impacts:
· Slick Roadways
· Ponding of water in low lying areas
· Reduced driving visibilities in locally heavy rainfall
· Air travel will likely be impeded due to the strong winds
Confidence:
Overall, confidence is increasing that isolated severe thunderstorms are possible with this potent weather system. The cool air “wedge” will be a major player on how far north the warm front will move Tuesday afternoon and evening. So, even minor shifts in the system’s track could lead to changes in the coverage and intensity of storms.
Confidence is still high that holiday travel will be impacted
