Gorgeous bald eagle image Ron. I am a multi-year follower and infrequent poster. You have been an inspiration to me since I found your blog a few years ago. I am an avid birder and love photography of all types so have been trying to elevate my avian skills with you as my guidepost (your posting of image specs has been a tremendous learning tool).
I made the jump to mirrorless early in 2020 by buying the Canon R5 (previous Canon 7D Mark II and 5D Mark IV owner). I do not have your highly coveted EF500mm f/4L IS II but an EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6 that I use with a 1.4 tc for bird photography. My first significant use of my new camera for bird photography was on a trip to the Pantanal of Brazil in June of last year. We were in a boat on a river looking for jaguars for much of the time we were there. Birds were flying over in front of us all day long. I learned very quickly how to get the camera up, let the R5 focus, and start capturing images.
I had read about (and set up the camera) to separate the focus and shutter release buttons (a trick that wildlife and sports photographers use). This separation allows the thumb to set focus from the back of the camera and my index finger to release the shutter in the normal way. By the time I get the camera on the bird, thumb depressed for focus, the index finger is now depressing the shutter for image capture with no delay associated with the dreaded half-depression.
With the R5, my number of keeper images has expanded by an order of magnitude (if not more). The eye tracking AF feature was indeed a game changer for me. Even though the eyes of birds in flights may not be visible, the R5 tracking will pick up on some aspect of the bird and lock in a focus that is exceptionally quick and accurate if against an uncluttered background. My blurry images are generally a result of my poor tracking or not setting my shutter speed fast enough.
You will absolutely fall in love with the R5 and I cannot wait to see the magic that you will be able to capture with your set up.

Terry H, I was at Tulelake for a short visit. My problem with Northern California eagles is that I have been to Homer and will be there again this year for two weeks. Photography there is phenomenal so I am spoiled ? I do understand however that photographing birds in a variety of habitats and situations is always a good thing.
The November gathering of bald eagles along the Chilkat River outside Haines, Alaska is world famous. As many as 3000 bald eagles at a time might congregate along the river feeding on the rich salmon run before the coming winter freezes the river over.
The Chilkat Eagle Preserve, along the Chilkat River outside Haines, Alaska, is world famous for the incredible bald eagle gathering here in late fall. The bald eagles congregate here to feast on the incredible late run of Chum Salmon that make their way up river to spawn.
The trip is designed to appeal to either beginners and intermediate photographers looking to learn about technical wildlife photography concerns, such as exposure and focus and flight photography. I also try to accommodate more advanced photographers, those comfortable with their skillset and technical understanding who are looking for a great opportunity to produce a great portfolio of bald eagle photos.
The action is always a thrill. Bald eagles gather in large numbers every fall for the last great supper before they head south over the winter. The annual count varies, but numbers as high as 3500 bald eagles along the river are not uncommon.

I took this picture outside my tent when I was camping in Ucluelet, a small fishing town located on the west side of Vancouver Island and next to the Pacific Rim National Park. The campground was next to the harbor and the eagles had a nest in a tree overlooking the campground and the harbor.
Before Importing the bitmap, make sure your eagle file is ready. If you are doing a big image on a layer that already has a lot of components, it might be a good idea to move the entire board away from the origin in case the bitmap needs to be deleted and changed. The bottom left corner of the bitmap will render from the documents origin (marked by the little cross in your document). Make sure you know what layer you want to get the bitmap on before you start the import (this can be changed later if you make a mistake but it is worth noting). I usually put my bitmaps on the "tPlace" or "bPlace" layer so it is included with my silkscreen when I export my gerber files.

Assuming the sunlight is strong and notdiffused by clouds or the horizon, these settings can be used in the vastmajority of occasions. Unless the lightchanges, there is no need to modify them. A shutter speed of 1/3,200th isfast enough to stop most action when it comes to bald eagles. Stopping down to f7.1 will give you a bit of leeway in terms of depth of fieldwhich is at a premium with large telephoto or zoom lenses.
If every bald eagle sported the whitehead, metering would be easy. But whatabout juveniles? If your camera settingsare left unchanged as if you were photographing the white head of a maturebird, every image that you capture of a juvenile will be underexposed, making themappear very dark in the final result.
So much to be impressed by: the quality of your instruction, both as it related to the use of our equipment to produce optimum in-camera images as well as the post processing workflow guidance, your knowledge of the area and eagle behavior and, of course, the amazing beauty of our surroundings.
One reason for this surge in Photoshop usage is the comparison to social media influencers, such as Lele Pons and Ellie Thumann. Many of these celebrities and influencers utilize Photoshop and other editing apps to make themselves and their posts look how they want. When young adults and teens look at these posts, it can lead them to believe photoshop is essential.
Press Enter to create the document (or just click OK). Switch back to the other document with the eagle and then copy and paste the image over into the new file. You will now have an eagle layer as well as the default Background layer.
Next, click around the bottom left of the eagle and drag upwards and to the right, along the direction of the wing. Doing this will mask out the majority of the body and lower half of the eagle so that the focus of the effect is on the wing.
Use the Move Tool (V) to position the image so that the fireworks follow the direction of the wing. Mask away parts of the sparkles so that it appears as though they are actually flying and emanating from the wing of the eagle.
All four of these gradients will be behind the eagle and so we want to position them in such a way that they appear to be underneath the wing. Remember that whenever we have a light source, some of that color will also affect the color of the shadows.
