Duplicate photos are a nightmare. They accumulate really quickly, clutter your photo albums and take up lots of disk space. Worse still, they are very hard to find because they usually have different file names and are scattered across different folders. That's why the fastest and the easiest way to delete duplicate photos is to use a good duplicate photo finder program.

Once the scan is complete, go to Step 3 and review all detected duplicate images. Make sure the Preview feature is on so that you can preview the images before you delete, move or rename them. When you're done selecting the duplicates, simply delete them all in one click.

Still, I winced at the thought of sorting through thousands of old photos one-by-one. What I really needed was a way to eliminate similar-looking photos in bulk and winnow my remaining library down to a much more manageable size. Fortunately, I found exactly what I was looking for with a free duplicate photo cleaner for Windows called AllDup.

While it took some experimenting to find the best settings in both apps, I was ultimately able to clear out hundreds of similar-looking photos using AllDup, which in turn made manual sorting much easier.

Once you have that, discard all of those that have unique sizes and then pass only those files with duplicated sizes to the process that bruno29a has provided. Even if the MD5 calculation itself is fast, this would potentially greatly reduce the number of image files to actually be read and processed.

I can't remember the last time I ever had to worry about duplicates but recently I imported pictures manually from my camera roll and it clearly has imported hundreds of duplicates (with identical filenames mind you). This exclusively happened to HEIC and JPGs from my iPhone's camera roll so it feels like a bug specific to iOS perhaps.

All this brings up the very odd choice of not offering the same deduplicate feature available within the import flow *after* the images are already in the library. In my case, that's hundreds of photos I have to hunt for manually, when the process would be instantaneous if the dupe finder was available outside of the import flow.

It would also be incredibly useful to be able to group photos from the library that are not *quite* duplicates but very identical (think bursts or multiple edits of the same shot) and allow me to find them, pick the ones I want to keep and either delete or mark the others as rejected.

How can I find and remove duplicates and/or similar images in Lightroom CC (not Classic)? It is not a realistic option to manually find these duplicates with these amount of photos so there must be a way to let the computer do that?

Sorry to hear that. Could you please explain how you started the import in Lightroom CC? Did you exported all the images out from iCloud and then imported them into Lightroom CC. Does the duplicate images have a different name?

Same issue here. Somehow last couple of weeks my collection doubled or nearly doubled. I have tons of duplicates. I use lightroom classic as my primary and lightroom CC is just synced from it. I have 50k in the classic and over 80k in CC suddenly. I am not sure how the additions occured or where they came from.

Why is there no feature to remove duplicates?

Simplest explanation on how they are created in todays world:

Whatsapp does differentiate between sent and received images. Therefore images you received or send, are both saved an therefore you have your original high resolution image and the one, that you sent, which gets cropped and downscaled. I got at least 3000 duplicates in my lightroom now...

I too need this feature. When I migrated from Lightroom Classic to CC it only successfully migrated my collections. All the folders I had were just dumped into a single folder and album in CC. I'll note that it only succesfully took applied profiles for photos in collections.. and the mass dump folder has 0 edits at all. Great. That's thousands of photos. Now I have to manually go through them all to re-organize.. and I am finding this creates duplicates between the collections that were successful and the other giant folder Lightroom created.

I do agree that post-import duplicate detection would be very useful in the cloud ecosystem. I'll move this to a feature request, but if a moderator remembers an existing feature request (which I can't find right now!) already exists, they might merge it.

Lightroom is. a great product. A suggestion that I know must be repetative is to have the option to remove any/all duplicates entered into the libary POST upload. I have over 50,000 images...guessing at least 1/3 could be duplicates. To individually comb through all images would be too time consuming. Certainly having this feature would be of great usage to a great many users.

Perusing thousands of photos from my smartphone transferred to my computer is a bit of a challenge. Separating the wheat from the chaff is a time consuming late-night endeavor. What makes this particularly challenging is WhatsApp, as it is configured on my phone (by default) sends/receives compressed, lower-res images, rather than full-res. Sharing a photo taken by one's own smartphone would, to my understanding, leave the full-res photo on the phone and additionally create and save a compressed, lower-res and renamed copy of the sent photo in a WhatsApp directory, effectively creating a lower-res duplicate.

As the first iteration of my envisaged workflow I'd like to select unique photos only (over a range of folders and sub-folders). If a given photo exists more than once (either at the same size (same resolution) or at different sizes (different resolutions), I'd like to select only one copy and explicitly only a copy of the highest available resolution (ignoring all lower-res copies).

The upshot / meaning of this exercise would be to include in the initial photo selection also photos received in WhatsApp - as long as these are unique and no higher-res copy exists elsewhere (on my phone / computer).

Some time ago, in Ubuntu 10.04, I was using DupeGuru Picture Edition for that. It was pretty good at finding duplicates in various sizes & resolutions. Seems that since version 4.0 of DupeGuru, the Picture Edition as a separate application is gone, but its functionality has been incorporated into the main application as "Picture Mode". You can try it, however currently only packages for Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 are available, there's no build for 20.04.

I've managed to get all my wifes photos into a Linux shared folder (which, setting up, is absolutely nothing like I expected as a Microsoft user). She's using Adobe Lightroom to edit her photos and storing her exports in the shared folder.

As a starter, yes. But she has loads of different exports of the same photograph, all with different names. She wanted to use exif information, and possibly find similar images if possible. To be honest I'm out of my depth with this photography lark, that's my wife's area of expertise.

I've had a look at both of these. One is an update for the factory installed "Files" manager. The Digikam app is interesting, a very capable photo editing suite, but not what I'm currently looking for. I'm going to keep looking, hopefully for a Linux solution. If I find anything I'll post back here.

I'm already going through my MP3 collection using that method. As for photos the scope is much more limited. It's extremely capable at search through Exif data etc but it can't search through the images with minor pixel / compression / size / crop / overlay changes to find virtually identical images. This is the kind of functionality my wife is looking for. She's had advice about a couple of high quality paid applications for Windows, but I was hoping I could find something in the Linux community. I'm happy to pay for professional / commercial products, but I haven't found anything suitable.

On windows I had several tools that would search through directories and find images and photos that had the same content, even if their resolutions and amount of whitespace, for instance, varied. Does anyone know any such tools for Linux? This is opposed to classic file comparison tools which just compare the data in the file and not how it appears on screen.

Duplicate photos can take up a lot of space, and there is absolutely no reason to have them on your storage devices. Backing up your photos to another device will protect them. Merely having duplicates just wastes valuable storage space.
