Very interesting…
Hello, Alligator Hotline???
In Gateway, Fla. (on the FL southwest coast, not too far from Marco Island–my old stomping ground), Paul Quinn will never forget what happened to him this past Sunday afternoon inside his home. "It's one of those things, you all don't think that it will happen to you," said Mr. Quinn, a U.S. Army veteran. Instead of doing his usual checking the email in the front room, he got up from the kitchen and saw he was being checked out by a 7-8 foot gator from his living room floor, inside his home. "I'm like, is that really a big ‘ole alligator in my living room? He saw me, and I froze, and then he started running to more inside the room, and I'm thinking like, oh (expletive) now I got to deal with this today,'" said Quinn. So, he called 911 and waited about an hour for Florida Fish and Wildlife to arrive and get the gator out. “I didn’t get too close; it weren’t easy cause the gator didn't want to leave,” according to Paul. The Quinns usually leave their door open to get some extra breeze inside this time of year, and the gator had ripped a huge hole in the screen to get in.
Paul took a few pictures of the beast and called his wife, Mary Jo. She rushed home from the Piggly Wiggly to see if he was ok and wanted to know "Why did it come to our house, Paul? And how much is animal control going to cost us to take it away? Is there a way we can do it ourselves? I would have been ticked if it had been a bill," said Mary Jo. No bill, but the gator ripped up some carpet and a living room chair, plus it left the Quinns a souvenir: two of its big alligator teeth.
“I don't want to have no fear of gators walking up our front walk, rip open our door, and inside our foyer again; I can't live like that. I love living here, gators or no gators, and I'm not leaving," Mary Jo said indignantly. "They always tell you to be careful on the news, you know, be real mindful of them gators. There are big ones live all around us, and this is why you got to watch out, I guess," said Paul. The extra large alligator, clearly guilty of “Breaking and Entering”, was captured alive and moved to an alligator farm to serve out his time. If you ever find yourself in this type of situation, there are many duly deputized alligator trappers throughout the state. People with concerns about an alligator should call the toll-free Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR, and they will dispatch a trapper to resolve the situation one way or another.
Thinking about AI… Geoff Livingston
AI Agents: Beyond the Hype Mar 11, 2025
What is an “AI agent”? An AI agent performs work tasks independently on behalf of employees. AI companies call them digital assistants that can take actions without constant human supervision. I think of them more as “If This Then That” decision-tree type automation with a bit of randomness mixed in for the outcomes. For example, if a customer asks a question of a chatbot, the LLM engine will find an agentic framework to research the customer service manual and offer potential outcomes based on the manual. Next, the agent will ask for the customer’s permission to assist them in resolving the matter. If it receives a positive response, then it will guide the human through it.
AI agents are at the peak of hype. Like most pragmatists, I believe we’re still quite a way from making AI agents a widespread reality. The technology is still largely theoretical, and there are many preconditions to deploying successful Agentic AI. It's hard to see most enterprises deploying them at scale on an operational level. After all, most federal agencies, the defense department, government contractors, and other companies and nonprofits are still struggling to implement plain old prompt-centric generative AI.
Most agentic AI promises are not ready for widespread deployment, but AI agents promise to provide greater opportunities to create operational efficiencies, save costs, and empower humans to engage in better, more rewarding work… https://thecognitivepath.substack.com/p/ai-agents-beyond-the-hype
Upcoming live events... (If you are so inclined, give us your 'Rotten Tomatoes' assessment on conferences you attend, and we will too- these will be used in aggregate and anonymously.)
PLEASE NOTE: A recent executive order applies to federal employee travel, directing government agencies to prohibit travel without written approved justification for the trip, including conferences and other non-essential purposes. WE RECOMMEND YOU CONFIRM WITH CONFERENCE MANAGEMENT THAT THE “SHOW WILL GO ON” BEFORE MAKING PLANS.

A few Trade Press highlights & lowlights:
“The Asia-Pacific region represents arguably the most dynamic defense market in the world. China is the instrumental element in Asia-Pacific defense market growth and, with the world's second-largest defense budget, continues to set the pace. Due to its geopolitical underpinnings, demographic pools, and still-developing economies, combined with the shift in global wealth from West to East, the Asia-Pacific defense market constitutes roughly 22% of total global military expenditures. China's defense expenditures currently amount to 46% of the regional total, with its principal regional rivals – India, Japan, and Taiwan – combining for another 26%. Some of the smaller Asia-Pacific nations hedge their alignment between China and the U.S. or rely on the U.S. to ensure the status quo, most countries in the region are revisiting national security, adding newer upgraded weaponry and larger capacity of inventory…” https://www.defenseone.com/sponsors/2025/02/global-snapshot-asia-pacific-defense-environment/403229/?oref=d_brief_nl&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The%20D%20Brief:%20March%2013%2C%202025&utm_term=newsletter_d1_dbrief
Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited frontline troops in Ukraine Russia last week dressed in military fatigues in Ukrainian-occupied Kursk. Ukrainian forces have occupied a small chunk of Russian territory since their advance last summer, though their holdings have shrunk from 500 square miles in August to 77 today. “After clinging for more than seven months to gradually shrinking areas, Ukraine’s position has worsened sharply in Kursk in the past week after main supply lines were severed,” Reuters reports. “Kyiv hoped to use the territory as a bargaining chip in peace talks,” the New York Times reports…”
