View this email in your browser Dear Pastor Alexander, Corruption in South Africa has reached alarming proportions. It is causing serious damage to our democracy as well as our prospects for economic development. Corruption disproportionately damages the lives of the poor who Jesus asks us to serve.   However, corruptions deepest damage is perhaps to our spiritual and moral selves as a nation. The impunity with which corruption appears to flourish has left many South Africans feeling helpless and in despair. We have lost a sense of agency by which, as active citizens, we can pray and act in ways that have the potential to redeem our nation. Will you stand alongside me as the Church acts against corruption?   Thankfully, over 200 civil society organisations have united to say “enough is enough”. We are planning a people’s march for 30 September on the Union Building and Parliament.   The Church remains one of the nation’s most trusted institutions. Civil society leaders are calling for us to add our unique theological and moral voice to this campaign. We have a crucial role to play in this action!   Will you endorse the march in your capacity as a leader? Could your denomination endorse the march? Could you help us mobilise Christians behind this important cause? The presence of churches is essential for the success of this important public witness. This is because: Public trust in the Church will bring moral authority to the march. This is important in denying the tendency towards normalising corruption in our public institutions.   As churches we have the largest and most organised grassroots structure in the nation. We can make the key difference by mobilising our people and continuing to work against corruption after the march at every level of society from the grassroots to senior leadership.   The Church is best able to inspire and motivate people to recover their sense of agency and civic responsibility and, in the words of the prophet Micah, to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with the Lord. (Micah 6:8) What is needed: Prayer and repentance.  Evil is deeply spiritual and needs to be resisted through spiritual warfare. We also need to repent for the evil in our own hearts. We can infuse this march and movement with prayer and lead the nation in turning away from our wicked ways.    Leadership.  This is necessary if tens of thousands are to swell the ranks of those who will march in September. Only significant numbers of South Africans demonstrating public discontent will mean something to those who do or tolerate corruption. Will you mobilise your congregations to join us?   Follow up.  A March alone will not be sufficient to turn our society around. Much more is needed to keep public officials accountable. This is a matter for ongoing conversation for churches and civil society. By being part of the conversation we are able to help shape the response. Let us be the leaders who bring hope to the nation!
