Theshow was praised by critics and won the Humanitas Prize and the People's Choice Award. It was also nominated for an Emmy Award in its first season for Outstanding Drama Series. The title alludes to Joan of Arc and the show takes place in a fictionalized version of the town Arcadia, Maryland.

These plot lines are interwoven with more realistic matters, such as the relationships between the Girardi family.[1] Various storylines that spanned multiple episodes dealt with the consequences of Kevin's accident, Will's job as a police officer, mother Helen's career as an art teacher, and Luke's aspirations to be a scientist.

God is portrayed with a very human personality, and does not appear to favor any one particular religion, saying there are "different ways to share the same truth."[2] He quotes Bob Dylan, Emily Dickinson and the Beatles rather than any scripture or verses. The series examines God from a more metaphysical standpoint instead of a religious perspective.[3]

God is also depicted as having a sharp sense of humor.[4] In the episode "Touch Move", He tells Joan that He has to send her "down there". When Joan is worried He means Hell, He laughs and clarifies He meant the school basement.[5] In another instance, He appears in the form of a woman exercising and says, "Why do people always try and discern my deeper meanings? This is the kind of thinking that starts wars."[6]

Osborne re-recorded the song specifically for the show. To fit the lyrics of the song, Joan first meets God as a teenage boy riding to school on the bus with her (although they don't actually speak to each other at the time).

CBS greenlit the show in 2002 "when public discourse about spirituality seemed more gentle: post-9/11 prayer services rather than heated debates over 'The Passion of the Christ.'"[12] The acquisition was made as part of an effort by the network, which was known for its adult-skewing shows, to appeal to younger viewers.[3] Hall developed the series with Hart Hanson and Jim Hayman, her Judging Amy production associates.[7]

Though Arcadia itself is set in Maryland, the series was mostly filmed at various Los Angeles locations.[3] Establishing shots of Arcadia's skyline and other outdoor scenes were filmed in the city of Wilmington, Delaware.[13] Scenes at the fictional Arcadia High School were filmed at El Segundo High School in California.[14]

Writing for IndieWire, Alison Willmore said "the show balanced [Joan's] missions with the mistakes a well-meaning but impulsive high school girl might make, allowing the show to also be a very fine portrait of life at a certain age."[6]

Joan of Arcadia debuted on the heels of Touched by an Angel, which had ended its nine-year run in April 2003. An estimated 12 million viewers tuned into the series premiere in September 2003.[25] Though Joan was broadcast in the 8 p.m. time slot on Friday nights, a traditionally quiet night for TV, it became a modest hit for CBS and averaged 10.1 million viewers during its first season.[31] The show regularly drew in young adult viewers for its time slot, which led to NBC changing the schedule for the competing comedy-drama series, Miss Match.[11]

The following year, "viewership sank to 8 million, according to Nielsen Media Research,"[31] despite continued critical acclaim which included three Emmy nominations.[12] Partly at the request of the network, Barbara Hall introduced the character of Ryan, a menacing figure and amoral "tempter" (with The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" as his musical motif) seemingly destined to cause a significant amount of conflict for the show's characters.[31]

I've already found many good singers through this show that I've never heard of before. I'm sure many of those cds aren't even for sale here. I found Joan Osborne ofcourse. I originally thoughted 'one of us' was Alanis Morrisette's song.. witch one's is it really?

One of Us is Joan Osbourne's song, as far as I know. Joan Osbourne sang it originally and sang it on the show, if that's what you mean. Alanis Morrisette might have done a cover of it, but it wasn't on the show.

Hey who was it that linked jamendo.com on one of these boards? I just signed in as CappuGirl. Feel free to add me as friend if you're in there too. I'm having lots of fun listening the music there. Lots of talented people!

Jamendo was me. One great Adam moment had the Beatles cover "Across the Universe" by Fiona Apple. It was used three times in different episodes, I believe. I have a whole JoA soundtrack at home, but it's been a long time since I've listened to it. There are quite a few songs that I grew to love. I can post a track list for you later. Just keep reminding me.

So I was watching some episodes of JoA on SciFi the other day and noticed some of the music was different from the music on the DVDs. I mostly noticed because I am a huge Matt Nathanson fan, and caught the end of Bringeth It On that featured I Saw. I didn't remember hearing it when I watched the first season on DVD, and I went back to check because I definitely would have noticed if I heard the song the first time around. Turns out I wasn't crazy, so that's good I didn't check the Double Dutch episode, but I don't remember hearing Bent on the DVD version.

I know that sometimes there are issues with obtaining rights to music for TV shows on DVD, but I can't imagine it would be too difficult or expensive for an artist like Matt who is relatively unknown. Sorry, but I was just curious. Does anyone know of any other instances where songs were switched out for the DVD?

Yes, a lot of the music on the DVDs is different from the one used in the TV episodes. I would have to dig deeper to tell you which songs were exchanged, but I do know that some JoA music changes were really annoying. I'm sure we have enough avid fans here who can recall specific songs. The only ones coming to my mind are the Beck song at the end of 1x17 (which I didn't like, to be honest) and also "Celebration" in episode 2x02 and at least one Avril Lavigne song.

They also replaced Peter Gabriel's Shaking The Tree at the end of The Cat (2X04). That really pissed me off. But I think the song they replaced Celebration with is the WORST one. It's just some awful no-name 80's light R&B thing. Ack!

But we really have to note that the song they replaced Beck with in 1X17 is one of the best songs ever used in the series. I love it so much I named a VERY important Butterflies chapter after it, Everything... Always.

I remember they replaced a song when Joan, Luke, and Grace were flying that kite. But I didn't mind that one, much. The song they replaced it with was nice, too. And I loved "Everything, Always" by the no-name band, and don't care much for Beck at all.

I was pretty surprised though by how much I missed "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" at the end of "Independence Day". It worked so much better for that scene, I thought. Something I never realized until it wasn't there.

At a certain part in your life. Probably when too much of it has gone by. You will open your eyes and see yourself for who you are. Especially for everything that made you so different from all the awful normals.

great list....but I don't see the DVD replacements do I???

I was in touch with two guys who did the music for Joan of Arcadia...including the music director John Mccullough. also Johnathan Grossman who did the riffs on the show. John said no list of songs (off the dvds) is still around, too bad. He said he thought the reggae song the ended that great episode The Cat was Land of Life by Jordan Lind or Lindsey. I struck out on ALL searching on that.that's the song the apparently replaced the Peter Gabriel song for the dvds.

When I first began to watch the new television series, I, as a former student of drama and now a sometimes-cabaret performer, was delighted with it. As a woman with both a physical and psychiatric disability, I have mixed feelings.

It is the depiction of Kevin, however, which is most intriguing to me. In the first episode the viewers see a young man who does not even want to leave the house. Slowly, with the encouragement of his family, he acquires a car. Then he finds a job as a fact-checker on a local newspaper. His female boss discovers that Kevin has an outstanding writing talent. The season has not yet ended, but Kevin and his boss become lovers. Their first sexual experience goes well ("And nobody sprained anything.") A former athlete, Kevin joins a group of wheelchair-using basketball players. Despite all his "overcoming," Kevin's way is not smooth. He is at times angry and lashes out at his family and those who want to help him. At times he is frightened and cannot ask a girl out because he does not want her pity. Above all, he is a nineteen-year-old kid who teases his younger siblings. He admits that he was "an ass" before and is now "an ass in a wheelchair."
