Husker List Information

This is a periodic reminder notice for the Husker List, and contains
subscription information, posting guidelines, and other information about
the Husker List and ways to access it. It also contains an URL list for
Husker-related web pages.
This document is posted on the 1st day of the month, and is also sent to
all new subscribers. The current version is also available from the Husker
List archive server as the file 'huskerlist'. A 'Frequent Questions'
document is posted on the 15th day of the month, and is available from the
Husker List archive server as the file 'FAQ'. To receive the latest copy
of both documents, send e-mail to unl...@tssi.com.

Please save a copy of the subscription information, it is much more efficient
for you to send in your requests to the automated processing address than
to ask us to make changes. To receive information on lists maintained by
us and how to use the automated subscription mechanism, send e-mail to
list...@tssi.com.
New subscribers should read this document carefully, it will avoid problems
and mis-understandings down the road. (Note especially items 9, 10, and 11
under the posting guidelines, which may cause your first attempts to post to
the list to be rejected.) Also please note item 8 dealing with copyright
infringements.
If you are reading this document through a Web server (i.e., with Netscape,
Internet Explorer, etc.), then you are probably not a subscriber and do
not have posting privileges. Only validated subscribers will be granted
posting privileges.

(1): Subscription Information:
To subscribe or unsubscribe to any version of the Husker List, send an
e-mail message with the action to be taken in the Subject: header
(e.g,, 'subscribe', 'unsubscribe', 'help'.)
The addresses for automatic processing of requests are as follows:
Huskers List: huskers...@tssi.com
Husker Digest: husker-dig...@tssi.com
Husker News: husker-ne...@tssi.com
All successful requests to these addresses will receive a reply.
If you have problems with mail from the List or with the autoprocessor,
write to: no...@tssi.com. (Please send samples of problems, including all
headers.) Mention that you're having problems, or you'll probably just
receive the help file.
All posts intended for the List should be sent to hus...@tssi.com.
Do not send posts intended for distribution to the List to any of the
'-request' addresses given above, they will either be ignored or get dumped
into a file of requests that don't match any of the action keywords.
Although we occasionally cull this file for misspelled requests or other
problems, we do not promise to forward mis-addressed posts to the List.
Digest subscribers who are on systems with limits in the size of individual
e-mail messages may experience problems with empty or missing digest
issues. (juno.com is one system that has exhibited this problem, there may
be others.)
(2): Posting Guidelines:
Posts from subscribers are welcome providing they conform to the following
guidelines:
1. Posts should be relevant to the Huskers or the University of Nebraska.
Don't send the warning about the 'Good Times' or other e-mail or
Internet viruses, chain letters such as the request to send cards to
Craig Shergold, etc. Those chain letters are not accurate, and we've
all seen them numerous times anyway. Likewise, we don't need to know
about your religious or political beliefs.
If you are the recipient of an e-mail or Internet virus warning or any
other form of chain letter, please do the rest of the net a favor and
don't forward it to everyone you know. According to NASA's computer
security team, the only thing even resembling an e-mail virus is
'redteam', and it is actually a virus contained in an attached file,
so unless you open the file you are safe. Other than that, the e-mail
virus warning letters in circulation are hoaxes!
If you have serious concerns about any computer virus information,
consult a computer security expert. Here are

Your posts should be well-reasoned, thoughful, and informative. Good
writing, punctuation and grammar are always appreciated. You should
attempt to make your point as succinctly and clearly as possible.
2. Commercial posts (including announcements of web sites with Husker-related
pages from sites that accept commercial advertising or sell products)
are permitted providing permission has been received from the List
Manager prior to each post, and as long as there is there is sufficient
newsworthiness and relevance. This policy will be modified if commercial
messages become repetitive or excessive. Post your press releases or URL
_ONCE_, please.
The List does not accept paid advertising, nor is it intended to replace
more traditional marketing channels. The FAQ document contains a list
of vendors of Husker merchandise and this information document contains
a list of URL's for Husker related web pages, but the Huskers List does
not endorse any of these vendors or web pages. Additions will be made
to these lists at the sole discretion of the List Manager.
The following policy is now in effect for posts regarding tickets:
One 'tickets wanted' post per subscriber for any game is permissable,
for up to 4 tickets, intended for use by direct family members.
One 'tickets for sale' post per subscriber for any game is permissable,
for up to 4 tickets and no more than face value plus reasonable shipping
costs. "Best Offer" posts are not permitted.
Posts from non-subscribers, or posts for a 'friend' are not permissable.
Commercial ticket broker posts are not permitted. Take out ads in
the newspapers, the Huskers List is not here to help you scalp.
Violaters will be restricted from posting for a suitable time frame.
3. Trivia questions, polls, surveys, and the like are discouraged, they tend
to cause a lot of traffic but don't really have much newsworthiness.
Graphical images, sound files, and other non-textual items are not
permitted. Exceedingly long .sigs, digital signature tags, MS Word
formatting information and other non-textual items are also not
appreciated by subscribers and not permitted.
4. Be polite--we're all friends. Namecalling, baiting, responding
to posts in an argumentative fashion, or any other type of 'flaming'
will not be tolerated, nor will foul or abusive language. This especially
applies to comments about other schools or their supporters, as well as to
comments about Nebraska and its supporters from supporters of those other
schools. It is possible to be both partisan and polite.
The best way to stop a flame fest from happening is to ignore the folks
who try to start them. Let the List Manager take care of warning or
sanctioning violators, please.
In the spirit of improving the exchange of information between sports
enthusiasts, the Huskers List has a mutual non-aggression pact with
selected other sports lists that have similar expectation of civil
behavior for their members. These lists will receive periodic mention
on the Huskers List (as such lists are relevant to the Huskers), and the
Huskers List will be similarly featured by them.
Husker List subscribers who join these other lists are expected to
conform to the guidelines for those lists and comport themselves in a
manner that will reflect well upon the Huskers List and the Huskers.
Unsportsmanlike behavior on any of these lists may result in sanctions
on the Husker List.
At this time, lists that are part of this agreement include the
Northwestern University List (not surprising, since I also run it) and
the Washington Huskies football list. (And, by extension, all of the
other lists for Pac 10 schools.)
5. This is a discussion forum, not a fan board. The root word for 'fan'
is 'fanatic', which my dictionary defines as 'unreasonably enthusiastic
or overly zealous'. On the other hand, under 'discussion' my dictionary
says 'talking about something in a deliberative fashion, with varying
opinions offered constructively and, usually, amicably, so as to settle
an issue.'
6. Excessive overquoting (especially reposting the entire text of an
article when adding just a few lines of comments) is highly discouraged,
please learn how to use your mail program or a text editor to just
quote the most relevant sections of a previous post. Do not send
'me too' posts that don't add anything new to the discussion. This
is not an opinion poll or an election, if someone has already said what
you wanted to say, there is no need for you to repeat it. When list
traffic gets heavy, subscribers are encouraged to combine their posts
to respond to several threads at once rather than post numerous small
messages one after another. When responding to a question raised by
another poster, direct your response back to the individual unless you
feel the issue is of sufficient interest to warrant sending another
post to everybody. (It's also a good idea to wait to see if someone
else answers the question first.)
7. A good rule to follow is, 'Would I pay money to read this?' If the
answer is NO, don't send it. Keep in mind there are folks who DO pay
money to read this List, and it does cost some money and use some
computing resources here to run the List.
8. Absolutely no violations of copyrights, trademarks, service marks,
logos, etc. will be permitted. Do not repost news stories from wire
services or online services, material you found on web sites, or type
in stories or someone's column from your local newspaper. The author of
private e-mail also holds a copyright on it, and has a right not to have
that e-mail reposted anywhere without consent. However, e-mail sent
to the List Manager will be treated like mail sent to 'letters to the
editor' at a newspaper. For a brief introduction to the issue of

Posting the URL of web pages with Husker content on them is generally
permitted and encouraged, but posting the text from someone's web page
without explicit permission is a copyright violation and is not permitted.
The issue of whether links violate copyright is as of yet undecided,
though, so this could change based on future court rulings. Posters
are strongly encouraged to give a short summary of the information to
be found on a web page when posting its URL, both as a courtesy to those
subscribers who do not have web capability and as an aid for those
with limited time, so that they only need hit the sites that they are
the most likely to find informative.
If you must quote from a published source, do so very sparingly,
paraphrasing is better. Raw facts cannot be copyrighted, so game
statistics are permitted, but analysis of those statistics would be an
'intellectual act' and thus protected under the copyright law. Posts
which violate the law or encourage someone else to violate the law are
also forbidden.
Significant copyright violations, whether inadvertent or otherwise, may
result in immediate sanctions against the poster.
9. Only valid subscribers to this list are authorized to post to it. We
reserve the right to verify your e-mail address and perform other checks
before granting posting privileges. To cut down on spammers, there is
a four day wait for new subscribers before posting privileges become
active. If spamming continues to be a problem, we may take more drastic
measure to prevent it.
10. E-mail programs which automatically format text as a web page (in HTML)
cause problems for digest subscribers and others on older e-mail
packages or mainframe systems. As a result, posts which are formatted
in HTML will be rejected by the list software. Generally all it takes
is to change the configuration of your mail program to correct this.
11. The list software we use is very fussy, minor differences between your
e-mail address as entered on our subscription list and the one it derives
from your post can cause your post to be rejected. This is especially
true if your mail goes through any kind of mail delivery gateway at your
end. If you get a 'reject notice', this is the most likely cause. We
will work with subscribers to resolve these problems as they arise.
Violations of any of the above guidelines may result in private or public
censure, suspension of posting privileges, or removal from the List,
depending on the severity of the infraction or repeat offenses.
(3): Disclaimers and other excess baggage:
The Huskers List is provided to the Internet community as a free service
and is not intended to promote or be affiliated with the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln or any other organization. We do not charge anyone to
subscribe to or participate in the List, although you may incur charges from
your Internet provider or online service.
By posting to the List, you are granting non-exclusive redistribution
rights to that message to all individuals and organizations who receive or
transmit it. We cannot control nor do we attempt to control any redistribution of posts
to other mailing lists, to any USENET newsgroup, via the web, or any other
type of redistribution, retransmittal, or reproduction.
The Huskers List holds a compilation copyright over the collected postings
to it. Unauthorized archiving of the collected postings of this list is
not permitted. At present there are only two authorized archive sites,
mine and the one at huskers.com.
Unless specifically denoted as personal mail, e-mail sent to the List Manager
dealing with the Huskers List which is deemed to be sufficiently interesting
to List subscribers will be treated as if it was sent to the List for the
purpose of being posted.
We do not distribute or sell the list of subscribers. (As far as we know,
the list management software does not give out the list of subscribers.)
The Huskers List is not responsible for any errors in posts, and opinions
are those of the individual posters. We do not endorse or approve any
commercial products, nor can we be responsible for any problems you may
encounter in dealing with any individuals or organizations who post to or
participate in this List.
Because of the volume of mail generated by the List, especially at certain
times of the year, addresses which bounce mail may be purged from the list
of subscribers after several rejected messages. If your system has problems,
your subscription will probably be cancelled automatically. You may
re-subscribe once your system has resumed normal processing. (We receive
5-10 megabytes of rejected mail from the Lists each week.)
Bounced mail from systems incorrectly configured to return mail to the author
of a post rather than to the list administrative return address have to be
manually processed and will generally result in immediate removal of the
non-deliverable address from our mailing list.
(4): Archives:
The Huskers List is archived going back to early 1994, the Husker Digest is
archived for 60 days. There is an index of recent posts to the Husker List
available by requesting the file 'index' from the archive server. To learn

with the subject 'archive help'.
(5): USENET Access:
The Huskers List is cross-posted to the newsgroup nebr.sports.unl, available
through 'nebr', the regional news hierarchy for Nebraska. (If you want
more information on the nebr hierarchy, write to in...@nebrnews.org.)
(6): WWW Access:
We now have a partial archive of the Huskers List available on our webserver
at http://www.tssi.com/husker/. The FAQ, List Guidelines, and the last
100 posts will be indexed on this site, for a more complete archive
see http://www.huskers.com/list/.
List subscribers with WWW access may be interested in checking the following
URL's out. Please note: If you have problems with these URL's you should
contact the site, we have NO control over and do not manage the web servers
at these sites. If a site seems to have vanished or changed, please let

information on how Netsurfers got named.) It's still being developed,
among other things it contains a more complete and up-to-date list of URL's
relating to the Huskers.

The Pinnacle Radio Network has put together what they're calling the
'Official Husker Web Page'. I don't know if that means the NU Sports
Information page is going away or not, and it was moving to a new server
in early December. This is the site that is sending out the realaudio
netcasts of the Husker games and the Sports Nightly call-in talk show
every weekday evening from 6 to 8 PM central time. You need the realaudio
extension to your web browser, a fairly fast computer (486/33 or faster) and
a reliable Internet connection.

Covalent Technology maintains a WWW site that is now concentrating on
football, but also has pointers to some other web pages dealing with the

This is a subscriber-only service with two levels, one for subscribers
to the print edition of Huskers Illustrated and a 'premium online' edition
which is said to contain supplemental reports on practices, injuries, etc.

In 1996 they set up a separate address specifically for Husker sports,
http://www.huskermania.com, but it appears to be converting to a $10 per
year fee-based service, and I have not received information on exactly
what you get for the $10, or whether it will extend beyond football season
or cover other Husker sports.

(7) Netsurfers for Nebraska
Netsurfers for Nebraska is the name that one of the Husker List subscribers
came up with for us as a group.
One of our subscribers, Stephen Bruce, has taken the initiative to design and
print up T-shirts several times, and will probably continue to do so once
or twice a year, though working with the licensing folks at UNL is slowing this
process down. (Details will be sent to all List subscribers when he decides
to run off another batch.)
Netsurfers have had gatherings at several Husker home and road games, and we
even had a banner show up on the Jumbotron at the Big 12 Championship game
in St. Louis in 1996. We generally hold a gathering in Lincoln the day of
the Spring Game, which I have had the pleasure to host the past two years.
