I'm also interested in others experiences with the various satellite providers, as I'm debating cutting the cord with my cable TV provider. My only complaint with my current cable provider is that they aren't providing any HD programming, as it looks like they'll be shutting down their TV service in the next couple of years. There is another cable company in town, but last time I priced them out, they were charging more than the satellite providers with only a fraction of the channels on the dish.

I'm intrigued by TurboHD from Dish Network as they trim down the channel lineup for HD only programming packages at about 2/3'rds the price of digital cable or a full satellite package. Which is what I'm interested. Give me ESPN, ESPN2, regional FSN, CNN, WGN, and the Weather Channel, and I'm good. Throw in Food Network, Cartoon Network, and Disney, and the rest of the family is happy as well. Only concern is having to go with their top of the line package to get Versus in HD for the Big XII games and the NHL.

I'm not interested in DVR's and the like at this time. I barely have enough time to watch the stuff I can watch.

I should have also mentioned that I am a little bit biased toward Direct TV because I order the NFL Sunday ticket each year for the Steelers games. However, I haven't had any issues regardless. Last fall I ordered the Sunday Ticket, ESPN gameplan and I get all the Fox Sports channels so I didn't miss a Husker game (PPV is easy to order as well).

I've had DirectTV now for almost 4 years. We do not have the HD services, just the standard package with the additional channels, so we have NFL channel, MLB channel, Alttitude, VS, Speed, etc. I need Boomerang and the Military channel almost as much as the sports channels :) We do the bundle with Qwst, so it's all on 1 bill, including DirectTV. I get 7Mb on the internet and sometime this summer the merger between Verison and Alltel will be done and Qwest will then bundle my cell phone plans on this bill because they are a partner of Verison like they are with DirecTV.

I've never used the online ordering of pay-per-view, just call in to get the pay-per-view husker games.

We will never go back to Cox.

I'd say on my street nearly 1/2 of the people have satillite and they are all DirecTV.

I guess someone's got to stick up for Cox.

I've had both DirectTV and Cox and there are some pros and cons to each.

Cox Pros:
=========
- Cheaper for my particular package (See below). A good $40 cheaper than
the Qwest/DirectTV equivalent
- MUCH faster internet (if you're a nerd like me, this is very important),
mine is 20mbps. I ran bandwidth tests on my 20mbps cable vs a 50mbps DSL
business line at work (with nothing running on it) and they came out about
equal. I've had about 5 different experiences with DSL and none of them
were good.
- On-Demand for all movie channels. Since I have all the movie channels,
almost any show/movie that's aired on the movie channels I can watch any
time for FREE
- Support is MUCH better IMO. Cox has always been very responsive if I have
an issue and I've waited on hold with qwest for an hour+

Qwest Pros:
===========
- More HD (although, Cox has all the HD channels I want with ESPN, ESPN2,
FSMW, HBO, SHO, TBS, TNT, etc)
- 'Lesser packages' tend to be a little cheaper if you don't want everything
- MLB / NFL packages (A big plus, no doubt. Though with MLB.tv I get every
game anytime I want anyway, in 720HD quality)

My package with Cox (Total Connections package):

TV
==
5 tvs (2 dvrs and 2 dig boxes)
Every channel they have

Internet
========
The fastest internet they have (I believe) @ 20mbps

Phone
=====
2 numbers on 1 line (diff ring)
Every phone feature including unlimited long distance

Total Bill: $190 + taxes

I had Qwest quite a few years back, so last year I called them to price out
the same services with them and it priced at $230/month without hooking up
the 5th TV (it's in my basement laundry room and I wasn't that concerned
about it).

Been on Dish for over 10 years now. I won't use cable, still pissed
off from years ago when they'd tell me they'd put a Nebraska game on
and it would turn out to be something else.

Every time I look at switching to DirecTV, I come to the conclusion
that they're better for pro sports, and I think Dish is better for
college sports, at least for the combinations and cost.

Don't have HD, need to cut down a tree. My neighbor's tree. I hate
that tree. It's going to die before college football season. So there.

HD is the way to go especially for sports and more on the Baseball side of
things. And you need a DVR also one thing I like about Dish is that you can
go back and review a play make the call and then get back to live TV. I have
the Turbo HD and I don't know what it is but I have it.
