Good Morning:

I believe that if Callahan departs under any condition other than being hired away from NU to the pros or retiring (which he will not do at Nebraska), then Pederson's days at Nebraska will be numbered too. Callahan is Pederson's guy (even if he was the second, third, fourth - whatever choice he was) and was anointed as the guy that will turn this thing around and return us to "greatness" and trounce the Texans and Oklahomans. So far we've lost to Texas once, Oklahoma three times and called them " f****** h
illbillies" to boot, this isn't a good start. The jury is seriously out on Callahan in fact I think this upcoming season will be the make or break season for Callahan. If the wheels fall off in Lincoln it will be interesting to see how Pederson handles a Callahan termination, not to mention how we'll even pay for it.

Generally I don't do this but here's my prediction for this coming season 7-5 or 8-4 we'll go to a bowl game and I'm not even going to guess who we'll play or whether we'll win, lose or draw.

As far as Fort Pederson (aka Osborne Office Building) goes an earlier post hit the nail on the head, no one gets in w/o approval (even donors), the only one with carte blanche is JR (not Ewing).

Gary, I can be dense most of the time but I am not following the JR
reference.

We might get a clue from how Pedersen handles Callahan's request (via
his agent) for a contract extension. If he sees this as a
"make-or-break" season, I should think he would not want to increase the
termination liability.

The only place I have heard this being a "make or break" season for
Callahan is on this list and among a few fans. I have never heard Pederson
say it or even allude to the possibility. I really have no reason to
believe this is a "make or break" season. I see you said "if". But, why do
we think it even might be? Other than Callahan's first year the team has
shown improvement each year. In 2006 NU won the Big 12 North, won 9 games,
went to the conference championship game, and went to a bowl game and played
a respectable Auburn team to within three points. I realize everything
isn't as it was 10 years ago but at this point in time I don't really see
any reason Callahan's job should be on the line. I don't think firing
Ostergard is enough to send a Head Coach packing.

Conversely, the fact that Callahan's agent is now
making this request through the media is a curious
development. Perhaps Callahan's agent was speaking
without the blessing of Callahan, but I can't help but
think if I was an athletic director, I wouldn't want
to read in the paper about a coach wanting an
extension.

Callahan's contract status is essentially making this
a "make or break" season, as the lack of commitment to
Callahan beyond 2009 will eventually become a
distraction to potential recruits, who are going to be
asked to make a commitment to Nebraska through 2012 or
2013.

Because of this, I think an extension will be taken
care of during the summertime.

I would ask at what point does he make it and what does he have to
fall below to break it? My best guess he will make it unless the wheels
totally come off the wagon.

I would guess that to be true. I was also noticing in this article
how the agent pretty well put down what Ostergard had to say as well.
Interesting.

If Pedersen gives Callahan, say, a three-year extension, then I think we
can conclude that he doesn't view this year as "make or break". If he
puts off an extension until after the season, it COULD mean he does view
it that way.

If the team backslides significantly (which is how I would view the 7-5
or 8-4 season that Gary predicted) the pressure on Pedersen to do
"something" will get pretty intense, I suspect. If that happens, 2008
will almost certainly be "make or break" for Callahan.
