I hope you have heard of these two. I am sure that this is the same Dave
Gillespie who is now the running backs coach. I am assuming this is the
same Tony Samuels that coached defensive ends at NU before going to New
Mexico State to become their head coach.

Yes, I have heard of them and others. My point was of 41 recruits, 19 do not
show up on the list of lettermen for even 1 year. Only 16 letter more than
one year let alone start. If this years recruiting class has similar results
it will be a major disappointment to say the least.

Anyone know if Joe is the brother if Rick Collura, recently retired LNE
basketball coach who won four straight Class A titles? I think Rick was
LNE 67.

True, Loren, but let's turn the thought "on its head." There is, I
think, an interesting thread within a thread here.

Let's DO compare the 1973 recruiting class with the latest class. (Or
last SEVERAL classes.)

Fact is, they DON'T compare.

For whatever reason, Tom Osborne did not attract a "bevy" of future
stars in 1973 as he was starting his head coaching career. Whether he
was too young, or just plain wrong, or whatever, it didn't happen.

Even Bill Jennings, however, was a helluva recruiter -- just consider
the quality of talent Bob Devaney INHERITED when he got to Nebraska,
starting, for example, with Dennis Claridge at quarterback, Bill
Thornton at fullback, Jim Huge at end, on and on. One season and, BAM,
8-3. Two seasons and, CRUNCH, make room, Missouri and Oklahoma, for the
new kid on the block. (Still gives me goose bumps.)

As Osborne said before the 1995 Orange Bowl, roughly, "We learned from
our mistakes and got better." It appears Osborne wasn't effective at
(a) identifying or (b) developing future football talent (or both) early
on. He learned and got better. He'd probably tell us that. (A "C" or
worse the first few years, lots of "A's" the last several.)

Now consider Frank Solich. A top ten class his first year. (Any of the
guys who signed could have backed out after Osborne's retirement
announcement.) Almost certainly he benefits from YEARS of recruiting on
Nebraska's behalf and his 19 years on the coaching staff.

Point is, it took Osborne ten years to attract the makings of a
powerhouse. It took Frank Solich less than ten weeks...

I like that. I'm not worried one bit. (Goose bumps again...)

Oh please, no...Husker history is favorite topic of mine. Keep shooting
a list out every now and then. I appreciate it!

:Bobby Thomas 5-8, 160 - Bridgeport PA

Was the next "Johnny Rodgers". Teamed with Vince Ferragamo with the
"stop & go, pump fake" sideline pattern.

:Kent Spaeth 6-4, 220 - Mahtomedi MN

Made some All-American teams.

:Tony Samuels 6-3, 210 - Jersey City NJ

Yes, this is Coach Samuel.

:Greg Jorgensen 6-2, 220 - Minden NE

Became a starter at offensvie linman

:
:Lineman

:Stan Waldemore 6-3, 235 - Belleville NJ

Played a few years with the Jets.

:Linebackers

:Reg Gast 6-2, 200 - Lincoln NE

Was also on Lincoln East's 1971 State Basketball team.
Had the game clinching fumble recovery in the 1976 Astro-Bluebonnet
Bowl.

:
:QBs

:Ed Burns 6-2, 207 - Omaha NE

I don't think Ed made it above 3rd team at Nebraska. But, made the New
Orleans Saints roster.

:Rocke Senkbeil 6-4, 205 - Grand Island NE

Related to former Husker, Lynn Senkbeil?

:
:RBs
:King Block 6-0, 198 - Nevada IA

Another "all-name team". Had to be a fullback.

:Mike Fultz 6-4, 230 - Lincoln NE -- lineman at NU

An All-American lineman. Played several years for the Saints.
I think Mike is back at Lincoln High.

:Larry Young 6-1, 195 - Jersey City NJ

Larry was the "other" defensive end in 1977, opposite Tony Samuel.
