Warren Powers is the 3rd most winning coach in Missouri football history
with 46 wins (1978-1984). He beat NU both in 1977 with WSU and in 1978
with MU. As I recall, he left NU's coaching staff 'late' in 1977 to take
the WSU job, and was accused of 'stealing audibles' when WSU beat us to
open the 1977 season.
The 'dirty play' accusations stem from games in 1980 and 1982. This is
how I remember it (thus, it could be wrong). Jarvis Redwine suffered a
knee injury blocking on an extra point in the 1980 game - replays seemed
to indicate that a defensive player 'may' have been going at his knees.
1982 was the 'Bruce Mathison' come-back game. Turner Gill was knocked
out of the game in the first half by what I think was an obvious late
hit by native Nebraska Randy Jostes. As I recall, Gill was
half-heartedly running out the 'bootleg' portion of a counter sweep,
looking away at the ball carrier, when Jostes came and leveled him,
giving him a concussion. Jostes's family in Ralston faced all kinds of
threats for a long time after the game. And if Powers hadn't solidified
himself as villainous by beating us his first two times as a head coach,
these two incidents cemented his status.
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
