The old indoor track is still under the east stadium, I don't know if it is
still open for joggers. Part of the track 'disappears' behind the
stands and is under the main concourse of the east stadium.

Does anyone remember going to track meets at Memorial Stadium before
the Ed Wier Track was built? The runners would disappear under the
north or south stadium, depending on the race, only to reappear a few
seconds later. If you go down on the track, you can see the various
markers to indicate where the races where supposed to start and finish.

Yes!

What a memory. When I was selling Coca-Cola (about 10 yrs ago) my friends &
I used to run around the stadium screwing around. Anyways we used to go down
on that track. In the Southwest corner is a door with stairs in it leading
from the field level concourse up to the upper deck concourse. In this
little anteroom right before you get to the stairs are two sliding barn
doors. That leads on to the track. He ain't lying--It is damp! You could
see out the tall arched windows that face west. I don't know if they closed
that off or not. Because we were down there during the game, I never saw
T.O. but, it was cool. There was a track area and in the center of that was
another sunken area (like a really wide pit with about a 2' drop.) There
was a place to go into the old locker room also. I can't remember how to
get there right off hand. As a matter of fact, I just might go early to the
Central Florida game and check it out.

But it does exist, you just have to believe....

Hi,

I think the mushroom gardens have been replaced with
the new weight room and traing table underneath west
stadium. But I can't believe they used to actually
have track meets down in that thing.

My great-uncle used to play football at UNL in the 20's or 30's. (I can't
remember exactly.) He was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of
Fame a couple of years ago. His name was John Rhodes. They called him
"Choppy".
Anyway, he was also a big track star. They really did have track meets
down in the "mushroom". My grandma used to take the train from western
Nebraska every weekend to watch him play football and/or run track.

Yes, Tom Osborne used to jog on the indoor track. I worked in the
Physical Fitness Research Laboratory that was attached to the track back
in the 1970's. Tom used to come through the lab most afternoons between
four and five, if I remember right, on his way to the track. Occasionally
he would stop and talk to us. One time he stopped to give us a new
perspective on the intelligence of football players upon hearing a
conversation we were having. It was definitely dark and damp in the
track. I have often wondered what happened to the track and the lab. I
know that the lab is no longer there because I stopped back to visit a
few years ago and the door was covered over.

As a walk-on kicker (with little talent) for the freshman team in 1987,
we used to run in the mushroom gardens as part of post-practice
conditioning (mostly 1-2 mile runs).

The rumours of it's dampness are accurate to a point. However, having
60 or so players run around that odd shaped track for 10-20 minutes
would stir up such a dust storm that by the end you could hardly see
each other. I can always remember laughing at the color of each other's
teeth after running down there.

Why? Was it a dirt track? The way I understand it is that the track is very
small (6-7 laps per mile. I can not imagine a track meat in this place. I
used to play racquetball in the building under the north stadium. Is this
close to the this track?
