Since I am not sure how many people here have ESPN.com INsider accounts I thought I would give you who are interested a peek at Tom Lemming's early Top 25 Recruiting Class rankings.
Of our beloved Huskers, who he currently has ranked #10 he says, "It's a new recruiting era for the Huskers, and the big surprise here will be if they don't finish in the final Top 10. Already five players committed to the Huskers have a shot at my Top 100."
It is interesting to note that the Big 12 is doing very well overall according to Mr. Lemming, which is not surprising considering that he is a Midwest guy. The B12 teams in the Top 25 are:
#2 Texas
#9 Oklahoma
#10 NEBRAKSA
#12 Texas A&M
#15 Oklahoma State
#`17 Missouri
It is surprising that 3 marquee programs are not doing very well right now with Miami @ 23, FSU @ 24 and USC @ 25. However these are early rankings and he notes that if any one of the schools above gets even half of the blue chip players that are currently leaning towards those schools that they would all be in the final Top 5
For those of you that do have an INsider account you can view the complete story at:

I know it is early, I know it is only one man's opinion (who happens to be best buddies with our new Head Coach) and I know that most of you put no weight in this stuff but color me as one person who is excited by this.
Go Big Red.

1993 recruits: 7/10 teams rated in Top 25 in 96, 4/10
rated in 97
1994: 7/10 rated in 97 and 98
1995: 8/10 rated in 98, 7/10 rated in 99
1996: 6/10 rated in 99 and 2000
1997: 5/10 rated in 2000, 6/10 rated in 01
1998: 6/10 rated in 01, 5/10 rated in 02
1999: 6/10 rated in 02 and 03
Or in other words, only 61% of top 10 recruiting
classes resulted in Top 25 football teams when those
classes became juniors and seniors. (Which is when
I'd expect those players to really contribute.)
Now, having said that, I think there is a genuine
enthusiasm in recruiting coming out of Lincoln that we
simply haven't seen in Lincoln. (And if that helps
Callahan get the players he needs to fit his system,
that's definitely something to get excited about.) I
think some of that enthusiasm is also entering into
the actual coaching, which I find even more important.
The players seem to have taken to the new staff very
well, and that excites me much more.

61% sound great to me. What other controllable factor are you going to
emphasize that will get you into the Top 25 61% of the time?

I don't think anybody has ever claimed that ONE top ten ranking would produce success. It is a good start but I think you have to look at a three year window. Look at the three previous recruiting classes of LSU and USC. I think they both had two top ten recruiting years and then like a 15 for LSU and a 19 of USC. That coupled with the recruiting success of this last year and it isn't much of a wonder why they are preseason favorites. Look at our 99 team which many husker fans considered as one of the
top teams in the nation. If you look at the four previous recruiting years, you would see 2 top ten recruiting years and another which just missed the top ten.
Football teams are comprised of approximately 100-120 players--you have to
have several quality cohorts to have a top ranked team.

Although Mikes analysis is interesting, I agree totally with Bimmer2002,
one recruiting class does not a team make. What would be really
interesting, for those that have the time, is to do an analysis of the
final top 10 teams over the last 10 years and take a look at their average
recruiting rank.
The links below will give you a variation of what you are requesting. Instead of the Top 10 teams over the last 10 years it gives you Lemming's Top 10 recruiting classes for each year and shows you where they finished in the polls over the 5 years after.
For 1993 to 1997 go to:
http://espn.go.com/ncf/s/2002/0205/1323082.html
For 1998 to 2002 go to:
http://espn.go.com/ncf/s/2002/0205/1323070.html
The poll data isn't complete for the 2003 season but you can take a look and sort of figure that out yourself.
FYI.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Volk
Jeff, thanks for the link! Concerning the ranking, the proof of the pudding in the eating.
