Apparently aioe.org is now over. That was the server I was using
since Embarq does not offer Usenet to their customers. I've checked
out a couple of other free news servers but I don't see the
completeness aioe offered, namely, the nebr.* hierarchy. If you're
still with NetINS then you're still in the loop but if you're outside
what server are you using?
If only Google would open up text only access via a newsreader client
rather than web access....

Well, Teranews carries it, but my attempt to reply didn't work. It's a free
account ($3.75 one time signup fee). I may try it again later. This is from
Giganews and I also have Easynews which carries it as well. Both those two
cost about $12 a month though.
Oh yeah... Happy New Year!

Sorry to be slow in replying, these posts didn't show up in my
news feeds and I don't check in on my netINS account all that
often.
I've been using both aioe.org and news.motzarella.org. On some of
the news.* groups I've seen that aioe had a hardware problem
toward the end of December, but got it fixed and came back up for
a few days. They went away again, and my understanding is he's
looking for a new colocation facility. I hadn't heard it was
dead, and in fact the latest news on the website suggests it will
be coming back up.
I've also heard of http://albasani.net/, but haven't checked it
out yet--just limping along on motzarella. Damn Comcast to hell.

You too!

Hah, that's interesting. I just now on August 17, 2010 found aioe.org and
thought I was on to something and then I find this year and a half year old
thread and find out it's old news... :-)
aioe's retention isn't all that good but I found this old post on Giganews.

Problem is Usenet itself has largely been obsoleted by Web-based
discussion forums/blogs etc. Much of the Usenet traffic is in the
binary newsgroups for pirated software & movies/mp3s. The biggest
reason, imho, ISPs have dropped Usenet access is the potential liability
for offering access to the warez & binary NGs. The free Usenet servers
generally are text-based only NGs but are also offshore. The thing is,
even text-based servers still suck up bandwidth which their owners in
some way have to pay for the traffic over their routers. How these free
servers cover their traffic costs is unknown but short of using Google
Groups (yuck) these offshore servers are the only viable free way to
Usenet.

I use GigaNews mostly. The warez groups are a joke any more. They are being
flooded with virus laden files to the point that warez seekers have given up.
Some say that the software companies are doing it. Most of the movie groups
have been left alone, though, and occasionly I'll download one of those. I
really can't see how Giganews and some of the others can store all those bogus
posts and still have retention up to 6 months or more on those binary groups.
netINS gave up binaries at least 5 years ago. And now, of course, they've given
up altogether. I miss netins.test, but other than that I wasn't using their
server anymore anyway.
Hmm... aioe.org keeps disconnecting me. I'd better get while the getting is
good!
