Hope all had a merry Christmas. Santa was good in the Pastor Mac
household. Paul graduated from Penn State earlier this year and is
employed as a civilian engineer at a US Army R & D facility here in NJ.
Janell graduates later this coming spring at the alma mater, Calvin
College. Fine Arts/business. Nancy & I are aging not necessarily
gracefully but having an enjoyable time on the journey. I'm leading
services each Sunday at a local long term care facility. Life is good.

Good to hear, P Mac!

We've had a mixed season. Kathy's mom has been gradually
declining (Alzheimers and Parkinsons), and we moved her to a care
facility in July. Her dad (near 90) had just about killed himself
trying to care for her, and just could not do it any longer.

When we were back to Nebrraska at Thanksgiving, she had declined
markedly, and Dec 12 we got the call to come. She passed that
Thursday, so we had a funeral last week.

Kathy has been here since; I was here for a week, back to Indiana
to work for a few days, and now back here in Nebraska for a bit.

Kathy and I have had a quiet Christmas with her dad, and we'll get
to see some friends this week and a nephew's wedding Saturday
night. So some joys with the sorrows.

We're at that age now, aren't we? Yes, we lost my mother & Nancy lost
her next younger brother-in-law (bone cancer), then her mother (heart
disease), then her next older brother (bladder cancer). 4 close
relatives within 5 months. My mother was aggressive dementia & I saw
her about two weeks before she passed. I didn't recognize her.

Where are you now? NM? AZ?

Yes indeed. I think I may have shared a while back that I lost
both of my parents in 2014. My mother declined quite rapidly from
lymphoma, and I was with her through much of her hospice--and at
the end. It really changed my perspectives.

My dad went even more quickly from advanced prostrate cancer. It
had gone unnoticed for a long time (actuallly until he could no
longer walk)--because he had been on chronic pain meds for chronic
back problems. It was a rough year, and I'm still not fully back
to my old self.

Sounds like you have had plenty of rough life experiences
yourself, and I'm preaching to the choir here. Glad to see you
are keeping up good spirits!

I'm coming to know the saying that growing old is not for pussies.
It's not just the increasing variety and intensity of infirmities
and physical failings, it's the losses of loved ones from our
lives.

Kathy and I are still living in Bloomington, IN. And will be
relocating once my employment there is done. At 61, I'm still not
quite ready to retire, but it's also not clear this job will last
until that time comes. We'll see. We're spending the Christmas
holiday in Nebraska with Kathy's family, so in Sterling now.

NM and AZ are definitely on my list for appealing retirement
locations. Not sure that will fly though, because Kathy will
probably want to be somewhere closer to kids (and grandkids).

You work for IU? or a related entity? I know the great Internet Oracle
was maintained via the CS dep't at IU.

Well, that's an interesting question. As it happens, IU was one
of the three grad schools I visited--but I ended up picking Iowa
State. After graduating, I worked for a smalll in vitro
diagnostics company in Omaha for four years, then took a job with
Cook Medical in West Lafayette, IN. Six years later, they moved
me to Bloomington.

So it's somewhat ironic I ended up there, despite having *not*
chosen it previously. Too, telling people of the move from West
Lafayette (think Purdue) to Bloomington (i.e., IU) often has
people guessing I'm in academics. But no.
