News from the front: my wife fell a week ago 9/6, a simple stumble in a
hotel hallway but had a total fracture of the R femur. Broke completely
in 2 pieces. The trauma orthopedic surgeon was asking what meds and we
said Alendronate, a Fosamax generic. He shook his head and asked how
long. 7+ yrs or so. Apparently bisphosphonates, used primarily for
treating/preventing osteoporosis, causes osteoclasts below the
trochanter. IOW, bone weakness and subject to catastrophic collapse.
She now has a "nail" as they called it inserted into the hollow of the
bone and screwed into place. L femur shows an osteoclast as well and
that needs to have the same surgery. She's wheelchair bound until L leg
gets fixed. BTW, this all happened about 800 miles from home. Just got
back very late Friday w/ her splayed out in the back seat of the aging
98 Lincoln Town Car. She's in an physical rehab facility until we can
figure out what's next. Not a great start to Sepember.
