Text appears JPEG compressed for Gnome apps (Maverick)

Both server and clients are on Maverick (tested with a Lucid client as
well).

The text is send as JPEG images for Gnome applications such as gnome-
terminal (scrolling is slow) and gedit. KDE apps are not affected
(kate, qtcreator, konsole), text is rendered correctly (as text). The
title bar and decorations are also sent as JPEG (including the close/
minimise/maximise buttons). Changing themes or fonts makes no
difference. Metacity is used on the server side, while client side has
been tested with kwin with or without compositing enabled and
metacity.

Also, the session takes some time to be established. (a minute or so
on the "Established the display connection"
